Richard Hollerman

Most professing Christians know that the belief of evolution is a false faith that doesn’t rest on the truth. Rather, it is the vain attempt by unbelieving hearts to find some possible explanation for all that exists. After all, if they refuse to believe in God, what else is there?

Sadly, this faulty view has become standard in America and much of the rest of the world. It is the only view of origins allowed in the public school system. (It is amazing that the government would only permit lies to be spread to some 50 million children!) Further, it is found in all of the public museums in America; it is found on public broadcasting; it is the standard view found on television; and we see it displayed in many magazines. The account of how a monumental lie could become so deeply rooted in the minds of an entire nation should be the subject for a study in itself!

Perhaps we don’t often think of this, but many people reason this way: If everything began some 14 billion years ago in a “Big Bang” experience, if the earth arose some 4.5 billion years ago in which life arose from non-living substances, and if everything conscious and living today finds its origin in these events, maybe life also arose through spontaneous generation and “chance” in other galaxies in the universe! If you were the belligerent Richard Dawkins, you might speculate that extraterrestrial beings “seeded” life on earth—and this is where you and I came from!

This is the very belief that is being promulgated in many ways today. In fact, even the United States government hopes to find some signs of life elsewhere in the universe! The SETI project has been sending out electronic signals with the hope that some intelligent life elsewhere will “hear” and “answer” in a way that we can know of its existence. After all (as the theory goes), if life arose by itself on earth with the right sort of circumstances, perhaps life also arose millions of light years away on another “earth-like” planet!

Recently, we noticed an article entitled, “Spacecraft TESS to Scan for Alien Worlds” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, March 27, 2018).The article says that on April 16, “a little spacecraft known as the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, bristling with cameras and ambition, will ascend on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in a blaze of smoke and fire from the old Apollo launching pad and take up a lengthy residence between the moon and the Earth.” Do you suppose that this spacecraft will be seeking information on the earth or the moon? No, indeed! “There it will spend the next two years, at least, scanning the sky for alien worlds.”

If God is true (and He is!) and if His Word is true (and it is!), we already know that no intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. Only on the earth! As the psalmist says, “The heavens are the heavens of the LORD, but the earth He has given to the sons of men” (Psalm 115:16). One sphere is where God dwells—the heavens. And the other sphere is where humans dwell—the earth. There is no other.

God created “the heavens and the earth” when? “In the beginning” (Genesis 1:1). But on the fourth day, the Creator brought the heavenly bodies into existence:

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning a fourth day. (Genesis 1:14-19)

We can learn many things from this brief section that pertains to the fourth day of creation week, but notice this: First, the heavenly bodies were placed in space on the fourth day, not the first day. Second, this occurred some 6,000 years ago, not 14 billion years ago. Third, the heavenly bodies had a purpose—to give light on the earth and to be for signs and seasons. For at least these reasons, we should not see the stars as locations for other creatures who can receive or give communication! There are only four classes of beings in the universe—God (as well as Christ Jesus and the Spirit), the angels, Satan and the demons, and human beings. There are no extraterrestrial intelligent beings.

According to the article TESS will seek to answer some very perplexing questions that have occupied the minds of humans for years, and “dominated astronomy for the last three decades: Are we alone/ Are there other Earths? Evidence of even a single microbe anywhere else in the galaxy would rock science.” Our tax dollars are being used in the vain attempt to find other intelligent beings in the Milky Way galaxy, but all of this is vain and presumptuous!

Not willing to accept the fact of creation and the inspiration of the Bible, unbelieving and evolutionary astronomers are hopeful that somewhere in space there could be other intelligent life as on earth, which (they contend) arose from non-life millions of years ago and evolved into homo sapiens.

NASA launched the Kepler spacecraft in 2009 and this man-made craft “discovered about 4,000 possible planets in one small patch of the Milky Way near the constellation Cygnus.” The article continues: “Thanks to efforts like Kepler’s, astronomers now think there are billions of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy, which means the nearest one could be as close as 10 to 15 light-years from here.” Sara Seager, a planetary scientist, at MIT admits, “Most of the stars with planets are far away,” but “TESS will fill in planets around nearby stars.” George Ricker, another researcher from MIT “expects to find some 500 Earth-size plants within 300 light-years of here.” Obviously, no earth craft of any kind could reach such a long distance!

Not to be defeated, Ricker declares, “TESS is going to be a lot of fun. . . . There are 20 million stars we can look at.” As much as they would like to make contact with intelligent beings somewhere among these stars in our galaxy, this will never happen. God created earth for a purpose—the purpose of being the “home” of people. If God had made other human-like beings somewhere, they too would have fallen and this means they would have required a redeemer! Jesus Christ only died for human beings. God is interested alone in the men and women He has created, ones who may become His children—sons and daughters in His eternal family (1 John 3:1-2)!

As we conclude, it is probably good to remember two additional points. At the end when Christ returns in judgment, all things will be destroyed! Here is Peter’s description of this climactic event:

The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:10-13).

If God had made “creatures” to populate other planets in the universe, they would all be destroyed at this time of judgment by fire! Notice also that “we” (humans) are looking for “new heavens and a new earth.” There would be no other place for these non-human creatures after the destruction of the heavens!

Secondly, we know that the false and blasphemous view of evolution is the basis of this TESS project. These unbelieving and evolutionary astronomers think that somewhere in the galaxy (and remember that there are millions of other galaxies in the universe!) there just must be other creatures who have evolved from non-living elements. Since we know that this is absolutely false, we must see that this attempt to find life is prideful and wicked! We must not promote or accept such an evil project!

Let us remember that all attempts to “play God” are bound to failure. God’s creation, the fall (into sin), and man’s restoration is described carefully and fully in 66 books of the Bible. You and I have the blessed privilege of coming to God, our Creator, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Remember, “if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
