A Form of Blasphemy!

A Form of Blasphemy!

A Form of Blasphemy!

Blasphemy is “impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things” (Random House Webster’s College Dictionary). Probably most people would assume that blasphemy would include such things as cursing with God’s name or speaking evil of God. But can it take a slightly different form?

We know that God is called the “Holy One” and He says, “I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15-16). As the Holy One, God is separated from all that is unholy, sinful, evil, and unrighteous. He is the very standard of right and wrong, thus we must never think that God violates His own law. He is the Law. He is the epitome of what is holy, right, true, and good.  God does not sin and cannot sin.

Surely one of the most grievous and wicked sins we can commit would be to charge God with sinful thoughts, words, or behavior! We must never say that God has sinned, can sin, or will sin!

I was made to think of this today as I noted a short article in the newspaper this morning entitled, “Woman Buys Anti-Gay Family Dinner” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram). The story told of a homosexual woman who paid the bill for an anti-homosexual family’s visit to a restaurant. She sent this note: “Happy Holidays from the very gay, very liberal table sitting next to you. Jesus made me this way. P.S. Be accepting of your family.” The point that got my attention was the fact that this lesbian said that “Jesus made me this way.” Of course, she meant that Jesus (or God) had made her a homosexual!

Think of this for a moment. God tells us in His Word that no unrepentant homosexual will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) but, instead, will be judged by God (Hebrews 13:4) and sent to the lake of fire (cf. Revelation 21:8). Question: Would a holy and loving God intentionally make a person a sinner and send that person to hell because of His own creative work? If God caused this woman to be a homosexual and go to hell, would that be a loving thing to do? Wouldn’t this woman’s accusation against Jesus or God be sinful of the greatest sort? Would it not be a grievous form of blasphemy against the holy character of our Savior?

We know the answer. What this woman and many others say cannot be true. Many others have claimed that God “made” them a homosexual or some other sinner who commits sinful activity. Some say that God “made” them an a drunkard (an alcoholic) or some other sinner. Every time a person makes such a charge, we suspect that the man or woman is seeking to escape personal responsibility for their refusal to repent and live a holy life. Instead of repenting, the person would rather blame God for making them a certain way—to sin and thereby go to hell.

Let’s see through this modern camouflage that blames God for one’s own evil character and transgression. Let’s not be taken in by such a lie—and such a blasphemy! When we “dishonor” God, we “blaspheme” God and this is a very, very serious sin. Now is the time to repent of all such foolishness and to proclaim to others the danger of speaking against God by using this foolish tactic!
