Homosexual Woman Methodist Bishop?

We’ve heard or read of the sodomite Episcopal bishop—and now we read of the Methodist bishop! As most of us know, the United Methodist Church is among the most liberal of denominations in the United States. (We have an entire series of articles on this website on the various false teachings and practices of this organization.) Now we read of one of the leading Methodist administrators being involved in gross immorality.

Homosexual Woman Methodist Bishop?

The first thing we may notice is that this so-called “Bishop” is a woman! That’s right! We note that God through His apostolic ambassador Paul, makes it clear that one must be the “husband” of one wife—thus a male and not a female (1 Timothy 3:1-3; Titus 1:5-7). But this is a mere technicality that may be easily dismissed by a church with a theological system that doesn’t take Scripture seriously—and even dismisses the divine inspiration of God’s Word!

Besides this point, we also noticed in our series on United Methodism (and in other articles as well) that various denominations are totally confused on the position of overseership. The overseer (KJV: “bishop”) is the shepherd (KJV: “pastor”) who is also the elder (presbyter). They are one and the same position in Scripture (cf. Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Peter 5:1-3; Titus 1:5-7). One who occupies this position must be a man, with faithful children, and he must meet a wide range of qualifications (Titus 1; 1 Timothy 3).

We might add here that according to God’s instructions, a woman “must quietly receive instruction [not give instruction] with entire submissiveness” (1 Timothy 2:11). A woman is not permitted to “teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet” (v. 12). Men are to lead in prayer–not women (v. 9). They are forbidden to take a leading role in the assembly, such as speaking or teaching, and this comes from the Lord (1 Corinthians 14:33-37). Thus, on another account, “Bishop” Karen Oliveto is fighting against God!

And now to the point of our article. We find it amazing that “Bishop” Karen Oliveto, the Methodist leader, is “married” to a woman! (See “Methodist Court Hears Challenge on Gay Bishop,” Fort Worth Star-Telegram, April 26, 2017). This denomination has for some years been involved in controversy over homosexuality and other issues related to ethics and theology. Thus, the highest United Methodist Church court is to rule on the legitimacy of Oliveto’s election as Bishop, in light of the fact that the Methodist discipline still forbids homosexuality.

There is scheduled to be a special assembly in February 2019 to discuss the differences in the Methodist Church regarding LGBT members. While African and Asian Methodists are more united in their opposition to this sexual deviation, American Methodists are much more likely to accept it. As we say, there are differences of view on the nature and position of Scripture in the life of the church.

The “liberals” (if we may call them that) who reject the inspiration and authority of Scripture are more prone to accept the practice of homosexuality, while the “conservatives” (who surely represent the traditional view of John Wesley their founder and most Methodists until the modern era) would surely reject this immoral relationship.

For readers who are interested, Scripture is decidedly against all sexual immorality—including fornication, adultery, homosexuality, and all other aberrations. Scripture says that homosexuality is a perversion of God’s good sexuality, one that deviates from holy marriage of one man and one woman for life (Matthew 19:3-9; see Romans 1:24-28). Practicing, unrepentant homosexuals, cannot enter the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) but will be forbidden to enter (Galatians 5:19-21). God’s righteous wrath rests on those who are unrepentant and continue in the fleshly practice of homosexuality (Ephesians 5:4-7; Colossians 3:5-7). All homosexuals (along with all other fornicators and adulterers) will have their part in the lake of fire—known as “hell” (Revelation 21:8; Hebrews 13:4).

Homosexual Woman Methodist Bishop?

Think with me for a moment: How is it possible for a woman to practice homosexuality, and lead a “flock” of God, when Scripture is clear that no unrepentant homosexual can enter the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Doesn’t this seem strange and bizarre? How can a sodomite be an example of holy living when she openly practices the wicked immorality of homosexuality? A bishop is to “have a good reputation” (1 Timothy 3:7), which a homosexual cannot have, as long as she continues in this wicked sin. In many ways, it would be entirely inconsistent for this woman to accept an unscriptural position of being a “bishop” and remain in her gross sexual immorality!

We would encourage “Bishop” Karen Oliveto to repent of her gross, unspeakable sexual immorality, as well as other sins, such as occupying a position that the Holy Spirit never gave to us. God loves Karen and we do too, thus we would want to see her saved and received into the Kingdom of God!
