The Paintbrush is Too Big!

The Paintbrush is Too Big!

Recently Robert Cappa wrote a reactionary, bitter letter denouncing all religion (“Enough is Enough”): “I have had it. I now totally reject every form of religion on earth.”  He castigates “religion” because he finds examples of hypocrisy and inconsistency. What if we denounced all men because some are cruel and unloving? Would this be fair?

Cappa decries Iranian Muslims since (he says) they don’t believe in “happiness and dancing”! Doesn’t he know of any happy Muslims? He puts down the restriction against female priests, but Scripture says that every Christian is a priest (1 Peter 2:5, 9).  He denounces Catholicism because of the Crusades and the Inquisition. Rightly so, since these violated Jesus’ teaching.  He denounces Salem witch trials, but these bizarre trials only convicted a handful of people.

Cappa denounces those finding others “lost or infidels.” If people are lost because of their sins or refusal to believe in Christ, why is it wrong to warn of their terrible future—unless they repent (2 Peter 3:9)? Jesus warned, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” Cappa’s problem is not with “religion” but with the Lord Jesus Christ!
