Women, Does Your Hair Show that you are a Woman—a Godly, Submissive, and Pure Woman?

Women, Does Your Hair Show that you are a Woman—a Godly, Submissive, and Pure Woman?

Richard Hollerman

We continue to find it incredible that men and women somehow don’t “get it” when it comes to their appearance! This could be taken various ways and it would be legitimate to do this. For example, how should the Christian look in the use of tattoos? Or what about women wearing masculine clothes? Or what about both males and females wearing unisex clothes? Much more could be asked, but today we only wish to deal with women deliberately appearing as males regarding their hairstyles?

Consider several pertinent questions:

  1. What do you think of the woman in Luke 7:37-50 who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair (vv. 38, 44)? Do you think that she may have had long hair?
  2. What do you think of Mary (Martha’s sister) of Bethany who wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair (John 12:3-8). Do you think that he may have had long hair also (v. 3)?
  3. What do you think about the inspired words of Paul when he wrote that a woman is to have long hair and that it is a “glory” to her (1 Corinthians 11:15)?
  4. Do you agree with the way Scripture describes the appearance of women and the way her hair is to appear (1 Timothy 2:9-10)?
  5. Do you agree with Peter’s restrictions and commands regarding the appearance of Christian women (1 Peter 3:3-4)?

These would be a few of the pertinent questions that every woman (and man) should consider in regard to the woman’s hair. What do you think?

In light of this, should a woman have short hair? In light of this, should a woman have long hair? How should the woman arrange her hair? Do you think that it might be a serious problem for the Christian woman to work as a hair stylist in today’s age? Would it be good for a woman to dye her hair to make her hair green, pink, blue, or yellow? What about the use of jewelry in the hair? What about braiding with the use of jewelry?

We do hope that some of these questions will be helpful and will serve to clarify this matter in your own mind? Further, would this provide some idea about how a body of believers should practice hair restrictions?  Consider also the man’s hair regarding some of these same questions.

Let us do all things to God’s glory!
