Why Do We Overlook Various Sins?

Richard Hollerman

Of the eight billion (8,000,000,000) people on the earth in 2022, we know that the vast majority are without God and eternal life. In other words, they are under God’s righteous judgment and will be eternally lost.

Am I being too harsh and unloving with this accusation? Of course, I’m not for they are lost, according to God. And God should know, don’t you think? We are merely a speck in space but God created all things. He spoke the world into existence (Genesis 1:1ff). Thus, when Jesus (the Son of God) said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18), He meant it. God through Christ Jesus has “all authority” thus He should know the limits to existence and whether or not people are His or not.

We don’t know exactly why so many commands and instructions found in God’s written Word pertain to sex. Think of it: God condemns fornication, lust, adultery, homosexuality, separation from marriage, “transgenderism” (which is not even mentioned in the NT, as far as I know), and so much more. And it is not just a matter of God saying that something is wrong and condemned; he also says that if we do something (or even think it) that it is sinful. Therefore he or she is wrong and sinful. God never, never, never makes a mistake!

When it says that God condemns these sins, we must be aware of the fact that God actually “hates” sin in all of its forms. Regarding Christ Jesus (who is similar to God the Father in this regard), we read: “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness” (Hebrews 1:9). Not only does Jesus “hate” sin and lawlessness, but God also does!

Consider now for a few moments what we read in Scripture regarding the “sex” sins that are under God’s righteous, holy, and total judgment. The Scriptures say that fornication must be repented of and forgiven if one hopes to find God’s forgiveness and enter His kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21). Further, we know that God condemns lust in all of its forms—such as pornography and so much more (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; Galatians 5:19-21; Romans 1:24). God “hates” such things as adultery (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Hebrews 13:4). Then there is homosexuality or sodomy (Romans 1: 26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10), and marital separation (1 Corinthians 7:10-11), and transgenderism (1 Corinthians 6:9-10), and every other sin in these categories (Galatians 5:29-21).

These are several of the leading sex sins practiced today (and even defended by some) but, as you can see, God “hates” all sin and all of these sins of sex. We must remember that God does not merely “hate” all sin and unrighteousness but that there are consequences or dreadful results attached to the practice of these sins. In other words, God does not only condemn certain sins but also shows us the results of practicing them.

In short, those who sin (and refuse to repent and change his or her ways regarding them) will not inherit or receive God’s kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:5-6; ). Again, those who sin and remain in it (without repentance) are under God’s righteous wrath (Romans 1:18; Ephesians 5:6; Colossians 3:5). Further, God will judge the unrepentant adulterer and fornicator (Hebrews 13:4).

Let’s remember also that such sins as fornication and adultery “defile” the perpetrator (Matthew 15:18-20). The unrepentant homosexual will receive in his or her person the “due penalty” of sin and will face God’s burning wrath (Romans 1:27, 32). All sexual immorality will bring one to the lake of fire and the dreadful “second death” (Revelation 21:8). In short, God will forbid them from entering heaven (Revelation 22:17).

We know that many joke about sin and its consequences. They laugh about it. They care little about whether God accepts or condemns a sin of thought, word, or action. But God’s wrath will come upon the ungodly.

We can see that sex sin is something that must be avoided. We must run from it! We must repent of anything relating to such sin. Think for a moment. Yes, it may take five minutes, a half hour, an hour, or even a lifetime. However, will this be worth the terrible results of unrepentant sin? Is it worth the separation from God (that unrepentant sin always brings), the wrath of God, and the second death from God? Is it worth God’s forbidding one from entering into His kingdom and into heaven? No, it just makes no sense! It is nonsensical and wrong! We must avoid and renounce all sin!

We don’t do this just to avoid the dreadful results of sin but we do it to experience the love. joy and peace God. The website mentions both the dreadful results of sin as well as what the sinner will “miss” in his sinning. We must live holy and godly lives because we love God so much!

What about you, personally? Hopefully, you can see from our exposition that sin isn’t worth it at all. Let us renounce it and let us cling to God through Christ Jesus. Regardless of the numerous negative results of sinning and the numerous positive incentives to live in righteousness, don’t you want to be like Jesus and “love” righteousness and “hate” lawlessness and sin! Let us strive to be like God in His purity and holiness (Ephesians 5:1; 1 Peter 1:14-16; Matthew 5:8; Hebrews 12:14). A life of sin is not worth the price we must pay for such foolishness!
