Why Do So Many Sin Willfully?

Probably many of us have read the fearful warning of the Hebrew writer—a warning that maybe shocks our senses and makes us aware of the dreadful results of known, deliberate sin. We could go different directions for a matter of this nature, but we will limit ourselves to one brief comment about Hebrews 12:26-27. Notice this well-known and terrifying scripture:

If we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of fire which will consume the adversaries (Hebrews 10:26-27).

If we were to treat this passage fully, we would probably want to include verses 23-31 but, as mentioned above, we will limit ourselves in this short message.

This matter was brought to my attention today when I went to Amazon for several bumper stickers that I wanted to use for our two cars and place on the cars for the love for my wife, Moni, and her love for me. I had used this message on our other cars in the past and they lasted several years. Hopefully, these bumper (or window) stickers will do the same.

Now for the point of this short message. When I was examining what Amazon has available, several stickers caught my eye and, sadly, were something that I had not expected. I should have known better since this world is becoming worse and worse and sin is becoming more and more blatant all of the time. Notice now what I saw in Amazon:

The first one that we could mention was offered by a group that apparently goes by the name of “Wyco Products.” You can imagine the perversity that I saw. This is the message: “I’m so Gay I Can’t Even Drive Straight-Gay Pride.” This is advertized as a 3” by 10” “Car Vehicle Magnet.” I realize that this message was meant to elicit some humor but, from a Christian standpoint,” it is perverse and wicked. The follower of Jesus our Lord knows that this “funny” presentation is really an evil message. Instead of making fun of being “strait,” we know that the perversion of sodomy is not a matter of “pride” but of shame. This will bring God’s rightful wrath—and not a funny response.

The next sticker simply says, “I Love Gay Porn” and apparently it comes from “Witty Yetis,” The Christian knows that “Gay” or sodomy is a matter of evil pride and not something for which to boast. Further, we know that “porn” comes from the Greek word pornea that means fornication, a sin that will bring God’s wrath and condemnation (Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:3, 5-7). This surely is not something to bring a good response for God will send a person to hell for practicing this sin—unless they repent.

As the Hebrew writer says, there only remains a “terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:27). We wonder why anyone would want to glorify sin that will surely send a person to hell or the Lake of Fire. Why? Apparently, some people are so greedy that they would want to sin themselves and encourage others to sin—all to increase their wealth and have others sin and thereby be sent to hell.

We encourage each of you who are reading these lines to not consider them as a response of bitterness to evil today, but, instead, that you would see all of this as a open expression of wickedness and immorality that reflects the beliefs and lifestyle of people. As we read such passages as Romans 2: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, we are reminded that God will rightly “judge” those who deliberately sin in this way. Let us not laugh at all of this but grieve that this will result in the eternal condemnation of such people who not only sin but “give hearty approval to those who practice them” (Romans 1:32).

I urge you to renounce and run from this sin and every other “popular” sin of our age. Find full forgiveness from God through Jesus Christ the Lord! Come to Christ so that you may find His complete forgiveness.
