The Season of Spring!

The Season of Spring

The Season of Spring

Spring is now here and we rejoice that God has brought us through another winter season. According to the calendar, spring came a month ago, on March 20 of this year, but in terms of the weather spring seems to have delayed arriving. If you are in the southern hemisphere, you will notice that winter will soon arrive there with the cold temperatures and perhaps difficult driving. But in the far north, people rejoice that spring is a harbinger of the warmer weather.

Spring is a wonderful time of the year! Even the Song of Solomon speaks of this season:

The winter is past,

The rain is over and gone.

The flowers have already appeared in the land;

The time has arrived for pruning the vines,

And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in the land.

(Song of Solomon 2:11-12)

In many ways, we are reminded that God is the great Giver of beauty and abundance. He shows Himself strong, wise, and merciful in ways without number.

It is true that we all live in manifold places and experience life in many ways. Some people are surrounded with poverty and sadly they, themselves, experience dreadful conditions. Even in these conditions, people can find elements in which to thank God. He has given the wonders of His own presence and the blessings of salvation—and the hope of a better day when all will be made new (see Revelation 21:1-7).

Others live in material abundance which must be seen as a blessing from God. However, in these circumstances, there is the great temptation to trust in riches and forget the God of creation and the Lord of salvation. So our word to such people is “Beware!”

In America, we are aware that there is no single place that is idyllic. Paradise is to come and can’t be found on this earth. For instance, some may think that southern California is ideal. But even they must endure droughts, lack of water, wind storms, earthquakes, and even storms from the Pacific. Others may imagine that Florida is the ideal location. But they, too, experience heat and humidity, rain storms and hurricanes. No, if we are looking for the ideal, we will not find it on this earth. There will always be snow storms, rain storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, earth quakes, heat and cold, and so much more. Let’s not place our happiness in earthly conditions but in the new heavens and new earth to come (Revelation 21:1-2).

With all of this, we must admit that spring does offer a glimpse of God’s beauty and creative hand. We find the freshness of the spring and summer flowers, the warmer temperatures, and the increased activity of wildlife, including a variety of birds. Instead of viewing all of this as objects of scientific study, let us recognize this as testimonies to God’s wisdom, power, and love.

Too often in the Western World, people see all of the beauty of nature and turn away to the natural. Year by year, blinded people conclude that all there is around them is the natural world. They vainly look at nature and are amazed at the greatness of evolution! In the words of Paul the apostle, “Even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21-22). What was true in the life of Paul is true today, especially in those countries that consider themselves sophisticated. In reality, they reject the true and living God who created all and sadly think that when they die, they will just cease to exist. (How surprised they will be after they breathe their last!)

This spring, let us open our eyes and our minds to see and hear and smell the beauties of God’s creation! He has done all of this to glorify Himself and takes delight in our ability to see through creation to His own power and glory. Let this spring be the opportunity, once again, to lift up our God and praise Him for His manifold love, wisdom, and strength!
