The Bizarre World of Morality!
Richard Hollerman
As Scripture would put it, this world is filled with confusing principles, confusing views, and confusing positions. (See 1 John 5:19.) Try as much as we might, still we will find that the world doesn’t offer rationality. In fact, sometimes we discover the positions just don’t make sense at all! They are confusing and contradictory!
Just today we noticed on the Internet that two positions are held and practiced on one particular topic. The one position, espoused by America and many other nations, would be that God is standing for morality. The example given was that the God of Scripture wants truth here to be seen and acknowledged. Thus, this position would be that sodomy is wrong, fornication or immorality, and all other forms of sexual immorality, and murder must be rejected. We must place a disclaimer here for we realize that many (in fact, most) do not hold this view and there are vast numbers of people in America, in Europe, in South America, and in other nations who reject the idea that there is an “absolute” right and wrong to many positions.
But then we notice another fact of modern society. The article that we examined clearly pointed out that there is a right and wrong to many subjects and we must always choose the right. For instance, it showed that President Putin of Russia has outlawed this sin (sodomy, transgenderism, etc.) and even declared that such evil must be eliminated. Both houses of their congress agreed to this. Thus, sodomy and the like have been declared wicked and against nature.
On the other hand, America and like political entities, have catered to this sin and freely endorse and permit this extreme sexual aberration! As a resident of America, this was especially grieving to me. Instead of seeing that this perversion is wrong, sinful, and wicked, it seems that America has allowed this to be practiced and considers it as a “right” that is to be accepted and praised! Instead of seeing sodomy as a “sin against nature,” as it has traditionally been seen (even in America and also the rest of the world), it now has been accepted as a “right” that should be allowed and endorsed, a sin that is not to be punished and condemned.
Do you see what we mean that something strange is happening? Let’s notice another example. We see that some countries seem to be opposed to the killing of babies, while others seem to be openly practicing murder of infants. Thus, places such as America and other nations seem to condemn this infant murder (at least half of the country), while others—such as China, Russia, Japan, and elsewhere—seem to find infant murder to be good and to be pursued! Whether America kills her babies because of immorality or not, we can see that something sinister and wrong is happening.
Of course, we could go on and on. We know and perhaps you also recognize that there are places on earth in which wickedness prevails, and that the atrocities that we have mentioned are condemned. On the other hand, there are other places in which the evils of sexual perversion and infant murder are seen for what they really are—the evil to be condemned and the righteousness to be lauded and accepted. How confusing and inconsistent! Do you see what we mean?
Further, we see feminism rampant on every hand. It seems that 95 to 98% of people seem to see no wrong with this perversion. Just yesterday, we were talking to a man who was telling me of his wife and daughter. In the former case, the woman was a leader and in the latter case, the daughter was training to be a leading technology expert. We wonder, how this “wrong” can be so widespread. And this is not only in America but around the world. Feminism is part of the fabric of today’s culture.
Why is there such a contrast between President Putin and President Biden? Why the contrast between America and Russia (for instance), when Russia (with its Orthodox Church) and America (with numerous denominations) sees differently on this? Why does one nation permit open wickedness while another condemns it—but then (on the other hand) we know that one nation may encourage evil while another may oppose and even punish it?
Uganda, in Africa, for instance, is bitterly opposed to sodomy, while the same country allows Islam in the North. And fornication is tolerated. I suppose that the same inconsistencies may be found around the world. There are hundreds of inconsistencies, with part of a nation opposing wickedness and another part permitting and endorsing it.
The world nations are led by people, of course, and they often have advisors and others, and they all are human and fallible. There are few if any of the world countries who are openly Christian and ones that seek to be consistent. They all are part of the world system that is opposed to God and His Word.
We must say, along with John the apostle, “We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).
