Still, Still with Thee

Still, still with Thee,

When purple morning breaketh,

When the bird waketh,

And the shadows flee;

Fairer than morning, lovelier than the day-light

Dawns the sweet consciousness, I am with Thee.

Many of us enjoy the early morning. If we ever have the opportunity to walk in the country at dawning perhaps we can imagine what this song is saying. Further, how much more beautiful than this scene of nature is the blessed thought that we are with God, the Creator and Redeemer!

Alone with Thee,

Amid the mystic shadows,

The solemn hush of nature newly born;

Alone with Thee

In breathless adoration,

In the calm dew and freshness of the morn.

Perhaps you can imagine what this would be like–to walk in the early morning, just as the sun rises. But the blessings of being with God and realizing that, through His grace, we can be with Him, this is far better!

When sinks the soul,

Subdued by toil, to slumber,

Its closing eyes look up to Thee in prayer.

Sweet the repose

Beneath Thy wings o’er shading,

But sweeter still to wake and find Thee there.

Maybe we can imagine this also. At night, after a full day’s work, we go to bed and find sweet rest. There we lift our hearts to God in prayer. Beyond this, imagine awaking after a night of sleep and then finding that God is still with us!

So shall it be at last, in that bright morning

When the soul waketh,

And life’s shadows flee.

O, in that hour, fairer than daylight dawning,

Shall rise the glorious thought,

I am with Thee.

We have been thinking of the delights of earthly nature walks and being with God. Beyond this, imagine what it will be like on Resurrection morning! By God’s grace, through Christ, we will awake and find that God, our dear Friend, continues to be with us. It will be a million times better than anything that this earth has to offer!
