Seeking to Please God

Richard Hollerman

Increasingly I am aware of the fact that our time on earth in this life is utterly brief—compared to eternity! We know that you may think that this is somewhat fatalistic and even dismal, but we all know that this is true. Our life will soon be gone but then what remains? What lies ahead?

Today, as I walked around the park and the lake lie beside me, I had to recall a couple days ago when I walked at the same place. At that time, I met, on the park bench, two Witnesses (i.e., so-called “Jehovah’s Witnesses”). I had met the one several years earlier but the other one was fairly new to us. I discovered that the older one had cancer and and she had Shingles. I don’t know about the other one. I told my wife recently, that these were two seemingly “sincere” women who were supposedly and according to their thoughts, were serving “Jehovah” (a misnomer, as you may know). They thought that they were preaching the truth. But, in reality, they were false teachers, false prophetesses, and would spend eternity in hell, begging for one more opportunity to believe and accept the truth of Christ Jesus.

I say this since we all know that our time is very limited. We may live for 60, 70, 80, 90, or even 100 years, but then we die and are ushered into an eternity with or without God, an eternity in bliss or in anguish. This is one reason why we must seek to be pleasing to God in all that we think, speak, and do!

You may not spend your time on park benches near duck ponds and in the city park. You may not be part of a cult like the Witnesses. But you will one day stand before God and give an account. As Scripture puts it: “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Today, there are about nine (9) billion people on earth. It has been said of this number, there are about 2.4 billion “Christians.” Of this, there may be 1.4 billion Catholics and 300 to 400 million “Orthodox.” The number is decreased dramatically. Of the 600 to 700 million Protestants in the world, many are parts of liberal, apostate, infant-baptizing bodies. And of the 200 or 300 million left, we know that many of them are lackadaisical, nominal, careless, and worldly in nature. Further, many of the remaining ones are Word of Faith (“Name it and Claim it”) types, which would narrow the number down greatly.

If there would be 50 or 20 million left, wouldn’t this be far fewer than what we began? After all, 20 million are much fewer than 9 billion. And we know that of the 20 million, most are not at all saved, redeemed, sanctified, and true to God. The number thus is decreased considerably. I don’t know how many have been saved and are saved now, and we commit this to God, but (as you can see) God has called and chosen a much lower number than we read in books. As Jesus said, “Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). Remember too that Jesus declared that His people would constitute a “little flock”: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32).

Therefore, we call on you—our readers—to seek God, commit yourself to Him, believe in Him and obey Him, plus love Him with all of your heart, your soul, your mind, and your strength (Mark 12:30). Let Him be the center of your life! Live for Him each day, increasingly, totally, and fully. This is the only way to live for Him now and eternally! Let Jesus be your very life! For it is only through Him that we find life now and eternally!
