Overcoming Sin through Christ

A Comprehensive List of Sins

(Alphabetically Arranged)

Richard Hollerman

The plan of this study is simple.  We will look at a large number of sins, one by one, alphabetically.  We will define the sin, describe it, and comment on it, along with noticing Scripture references on the particular entry.  Some illustrations will be offered along with the description.

Rashness

Rash means “characterized by or resulting from ill-considered haste or boldness.”[1]  It signifies “acting too hastily or without due consideration. . . . made or done with reckless or ill-considered haste.”[2]  Christians are to give thought before they speak or act.  They are to do things and say things deliberately and carefully.

We read in Proverbs, “Do you see a man who is hasty in his words?  There is more hope for a fool than for him” (29:20).  James also warns, “Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger” (1:19).  Many people have regretted speaking too quickly and thoughtlessly.  Scripture says, “The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things” (15:28).

The rash person will speak things that he later regrets, but then it will be too late.  He will also do certain things and make certain decisions without praying, without thinking, and without counsel.  And then he will face the consequences of his foolish speech and actions. We must refuse to speak or act with rashness.
