If Christianity is True

Richard Hollerman

I have read it again and again, but I couldn’t find it. I searched and searched but still I couldn’t locate it. If you are a reader, especially in the field of apologetics, you have read it too. Soon (below) we’ll give you the quotation.

Not long ago, I did research to discover (if I could) just who Blaise Pascal was. This famous scientist of France, was part of the Roman Catholic faith, but he was not a staunch member but still he was devoted to this organization. But, as all would agree, this man did combat atheism that was growing at this time. What he said made sense then and it does now. Yes, there are serious flaws in his argument but it makes a point.

This is the quotation attributed to him:

Either Christianity is true or it’s false. If you bet that it’s true, and you believe in God and submit to Him, then if it IS true, you’ve gained God, heaven, and everything else. If it’s false, you’ve lost nothing, but you’ve had a good life marked by peace and the illusion that ultimately, everything makes sense. If you bet that Christianity is not true, and it’s false, you’ve lost nothing. But if you bet that it’s false, and it turns out to be true, you’ve lost everything and you get to spend eternity in hell.

Think about it. I don’t know what your beliefs are or your lack of faith. I don’t know what religion you espouse or if you have any religion at all. And if you do profess to be “Christian” in some way, consider what Pascal is saying.

If an atheist professes a belief is some way (for example, if there is no God) and he is right, then when he dies, that is the end. All of his plans and desires and hopes will come to an end. But if the Christian is accurate in his assessment of life and death, and he dies (just as the atheist must), then he will be aware of this for all eternity. He lived a good life and had beautiful plans and hopes during this life.

This sounds logical and we can learn something from this. But, as you probably are aware, even though Pascal himself “believed” and was “religious,” and was a devoted Catholic, his own quotation spoke to him. While his friends who were atheistic (they did not believe in God or even a Higher Power) are gone and they are lost. Without remedy or change. In fact, Pascal himself believed and lived a lie all of his life. He lived and died in false religion and there is no way to change this. He would surely like to change this (see Luke 16        ), but he can’t. Consider the quotation that we have stated above and how it applies to Pascal himself.

We hope that you will learn something from this small exercise and our few comments. Do you reject the idea that there is a God, even a “Higher Power,” who made the universe? Or do you believe in God (and in Jesus Christ) and have a life of hope? If so, we encourage you to consider what religion you are part of. Consider whether Christianity—a true faith in Christ Jesus—is true and what you believe about Him. We hope that this website (www.Truediscipleship.com) will help in your own search.

May God bless you regardless of Pascal or anyone else.
