Fentanyl:

Serious and Deadly!

Richard Hollerman

Some of our readers may be unaware of how utterly serious it is to consume fentanyl. The response may be that those who consume this may “deserve” to die from it. However, we think that this may be a response that the Christian would not want to have himself or herself. Scripture says that sin—all sin—is worthy of death (Romans 1:32; 6:23). All sin will send one to hell! God hates all sin, whether taking the relatively “new” drug that they have labeled “fentanyl” or anything else!

The question that comes to mind immediately is, “What actually is fentanyl?” We find this as a partial answer: “Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic upload analgesic that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. “ (https://nida.nih.gov/drug-topics/fentanyl). We also learn this from the CDC: “Most recent cases of fentanyl-related harm, overdose, and death in the U.S. are linked to illegally made fentanyl. It is sold through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effect. It is often mixed with heroin and/or cocaine as a combination product—with or without the user’s knowledge—to increase its euphoric effects (https://www.cdc.gov/opioids/basics/fentanyl.html).

We hope that you can see the danger of this drug! God, of course, never intended for you to take Fentanyl. It, in effect, is a poison. And we have read that it has killed some 100,000 users in America alone, plus the countless people killed in other countries. In one respect, this drug is something that people must take in order to get a “high” and find pleasure—although it is a passing one. In another respect, we know that God would say that this is a deed of the flesh that is both dangerous and forbidden.

In this regard, we read at Romans 8: “Those who are according to the flesh [such as those addicted to this dangerous drug, fentanyl) set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (vv. 5-6). Surely God considers this drug to be a deed of the flesh. And those who are focused on the flesh (including fentanyl) will end in death—both literal death and spiritual death.

We might mention several points regarding this deadly drug. First, we encourage every parent and spouse to warn the user of the dreadful effects of taking it. Second, we need to exercise a rightful disciple ourselves and refuse to buy or taste this drug. Third, if you happen to be saved, we encourage you to renounce the use of fentanyl yourself and thus protect yourself from its dreadful ravages. And, of course, it would be sinful to not only have anything to do with the drug but it would be wrong to indulge in it in any way. We must not use our money is a sinful way!

Please don’t be among the thousands of users who become physically incapacitated and even die from its use. It is not at all worth the danger and the death that may come in this way. We both know that God would not at all be pleased with this use. He wants you to put only good, wholesome, and helpful substances into your body rather than that which merely brings a momentary pleasure.

Finally, not only would it be wrong to buy and use this drug, but what about other kinds of drugs that are on the market? They too would be dangerous and an expression of the flesh that displeases God your Maker. We refer to such drugs as the following:

If you are tempted to have anything to do with these sorts of drugs, be willing to turn away from them and renounce them in the name of Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit! Find true life in Christ Jesus and His salvation—not in drugs that are purchased from wicked people.

In the past, as we understand it, the most common “drug” was alcohol. Other drugs were available and some people did indulge but, as we understand it, these drugs were not as well known. Today, numerous drugs are available. And these can lead you into slavery and even death! Come to Christ and find true life in Him!
