Down, Down, Down
(Part 1)
Richard Hollerman
At some time in the past, the United States may have been somewhat “positive” in its views and stance. As Christians, we may wonder about this assessment for we know that (from God’s perspective) this nation had many, many false, misleading, and wrong convictions and numerous flaws. But, after the headlines (which I saw on my cell phone this morning), I have been in deep distress.
Many of our readers are from overseas and this we gladly acknowledge. But over a half of those who peruse this site are from other countries of the world. We understand that there are at least 195 or more nations, thus there are many. But America used to be a leader in the world morally and in every other way. No more.
Years ago, I wrote a manuscript that I didn’t publish at that time and may never do so. It showed that in many ways this country and the world is going “down, down, down.” In other words, it is becoming more and more depraved as the years go by. We find this sad, but we can’t change reality.
Earlier today I heard our Vice-President, Kamala Harris, speaking and telling of the fact that President Biden has appointed her as the “head” of a commission that would chair a group of men and women who would prevent the media (either on the internet, on TV, or in other ways) from either practicing or promoting morality in various ways. Personally, we felt like “vomiting” and could hardly keep from turning off the media and going my way! How could this country, the United States of America, be promoting such a thing? The media particularly said that she (the Vice-President) would keep various groups (such as sodomies, transgenders, etc.) from being singled out for harassment. We find this utterly sad.
Why? Because we know (and every person who knows, reveres, and loves God’s Word) that some things are right and other things are wrong. It is one thing, of course, to be part of a classification in which the person can’t “help” being in this class. On the other hand, it is an entirely different thing for Harris, Biden, and other liberal heads of state to promote wickedness, evil, immorality, including sodomy (homosexuality), transgenderism (see our article on this subject on this website), and other sins. It is revolting for this to be done publicly and supported by my tax dollars.
We invite you to ask someone in Nigeria, in the Sudan, in Iran, in Turkey, in Kenya, and in dozens of other nations of the world. They will tell you that public sins and open immorality must be punished. We just read that in seventy-one (71) nations of this world sodomy (homosexuality) is forbidden, outlawed, and even punished. How can it be that this many countries of the world are (at least in this instance) more “godly” than America that formerly had a world-wide reputation of being more righteous than many or much in the remainder of the world? How can this be? How can it be that America has become so degenerate and evil that it can tolerate and even promote all kinds of evil and perversion?
Scripture says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). This is true. At one time, the United States was more “righteous” than now (yes, we know that there were countless faults and evils in the land). But now, as the Scripture says, “sin” (of all kinds—but here we are speaking about sexual immorality) is a “reproach” to “any people”—including America.
Three terms are used in Scripture for “reproach.” One is oneidismos, meaning “reproach, defamation.” Another term is oneidos, meaning a “reproach” or a “disgrace.” A further one is atimia which is dishonor, shame, or vile” (see Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, p. 526).We realize that these words of “reproach” are telling, aren’t they! Indeed, America is no longer a “beacon” of goodness, righteousness, and holiness but one of perversion, evil, and wickedness! Ask the seventy-one countries that we mentioned above!
(You might notice that we haven’t quoted former President Trump here. Although some of his policies were good, we object to much of his character, his language, his lifestyle, and much about him. We realize that some of our readers may be disappointed with this, but, as Christians, we would want you to recognize our stance.)
(This was Part 1. We plan to offer a second portion to this article, Part 2. Please look for it!)
