Richard Hollerman
We are living in unprecedented times It would seem that life around us is filled with crises that have overtaken us and all of this seeks to bring us to collapse. What can we do? Where can we turn? What can we avoid?
We think of the wars that seem to be raging in Russia, in China, in North Korea, in Russia, in Ukraine, and in various other places—such as Africa, South America, the Middle East, and other places. We think of the health crises that abound—from diabetes and heart disease, herpes, and cancer in America, the infectious diseases (such as typhoid, dengue fever, and malaria in other parts of the world), and we wonder when it will all end.
Just today I finished and posted an article on our physical bodies and it was somewhat wearying, for it does show that with all of the things that are happening in our lives and in the world, we are left with a sense that not all things are well. In fact, we know that they aren’t well—and won’t be until Christ returns. We are living in a disaster and it threatens to undo and overwhelm us.
This is why we have entitled this article, “Come Jesus Come!” We know the passage that says, “Come Lord Jesus” and this leads us to remember that we are living in defective times, in a defective world, and we do have defective periods of living on earth. Even if we were to live a life to the full of perhaps 70 or 80 or even 100 years, still our life is brief and will soon be gone.
We do invite you to consult with our recent article, just posted today, that will make all of this clear. We surely can be reminded again and again that life is brief and will soon be past. As the stamp on all of my envelopes says: “Only one life; it will soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Questions were asked in the life of Christ, as you know. “Is it at this time that You will give the Kingdom to Israel?” Of course, we know that there are dozens of these pregnant questions that beg an answer. We will also add our own question: What can we do to return a statement that will deal with our present predicament? What can we do about our limitations? What can we do about our sad state and deal with our present liabilities?
We know that this life is not what God intended. It is filled with sorrow, tears, sadness, limitations, sickness, pain, and loss. What can we do to correct all of this? We don’t have all of the answers, of course, but do know that the Lord knows and will carry out His plans for the earth and our life. Even though we could wish that things were different, we know that the Lord will do all well and bring peace out of chaos, beauty out of trials, and sweetness out of the pain around us.
And so we cry out, “Come, Jesus, come!” and at present will seek for a better day, one that will come and we will find fulfillment—His fulfillment and peace!
