Bishop?

Richard Hollerman

I don’t understand, but recently I received a message from a person overseas where Anglicanism is prominent. In fact, this person of the clergy claimed to be a “bishop” and a “pastor” and “Reverend” was also attributed to him. Again and again we find unbiblical terminology.

I don’t really understand and I shake my head in disbelief. Isn’t the Bible clear enough? Do we not find enough in God’s Word to guide us that we make such gross mistakes? Consider what we read in the Scriptures that should make it clear—ultra-clear—what God wants and what His will is regarding leadership.

“Doctor” is definitely excluded since no Biblical character would dare to use such a term, especially over his fellow-workers. Then “Reverend” is also out since this is a term (in the KJV) that alone applies to God (Psalm 111:9).  “Pastor” is also excluded since this term (shepherd) applies to all of God’s shepherds or those who exercise authority in the assembly. “Bishop” is also excluded since this refers to an overseer (in the Greek) that is over God’s people and is to be found among other overseers in an assembly.

This website, purportedly set forth and maintained by conservative people who claim to be Christians, seem to have little regard for what the Scriptures teach regarding these positions nor what the significance of these positions. This is why we say that we wonder how this can be and what this magazine or “ministry” maintains.

Of course, there are other aspects to this matter that we haven’t discussed in this article. We hope that you will find these articles and consult them for your own study.
