Are All Republicans Christians? Are All Democrats? Or Neither?
Richard Hollerman
We realize that many of our followers are from other countries, besides the United States. We refer to such places as the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Nigeria, Canada, and England. So we must apologize for this and keep this a short article short—but still seek to answer the question above. We are aware that over half of our readers do come from America.
Probably also there are some who wonder about our stance on anything to do with politics. Aren’t Christians to be non-political, they may wonder! Yes, we are non-nationalistic and must condemn sin wherever it may be found. Yet we also want to speak about any sin or movement (good or bad) that we may find in society, and thus we write about this matter publicly.
We think that many of those in the Republican Party in the United States assume that this is the party of Christians whereas the Democrat party is the party of non-Christians (or pagans). But is this true? Are all Republicans Christians? And are all Democrats Christian? Or are they evenly-balanced in some way? How many really partake of the Christian ideals?
Before we seek to answer these questions, let’s look at what Jesus and the apostles have said. Our Lord declared, “My kingdom is not of this world. . . . My kingdom is not of this realm” (John 18:36). In other words, He has a domain that is different from the earthly kingdoms that we often think of. His is a spiritual kingdom—and we need to bear this in mind.
Let’s also remember the words of Jesus regarding physical retaliation: “Do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also” (Matthew 5:39). We might also remember Romans 12:9-21. Maybe a couple of the verses will be helpful to bear in mind: “Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men” (v. 17). “Do not be overcome with evil but overcome evil with good” (. 21).
Perhaps another verse would be helpful: “See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people” (1 Thessalonians 5:15). Of course, there would be such verses as the so-called “Golden Rule”: “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you” (Luke 6:31; cf. Matthew 7:12).
This may help us to answer such basic questions regarding ethics as the following: Does the Republican Party really follow and obey such passages as this? Does the Democratic Party follow them? What about the co-called “Independents”?
Look at the Democrat Party. Does the “platform” that we find there respect life (for instance). We know that it doesn’t for in general this political party approved and promoted the killing of babies. What about the Republican Party? In some respects, we do find a more “godly” (?) platform that does respect life. But this is only one of a dozen or dozens of different issues that we may examine. For example, we are aware that many, even of the leadership, promote and condone the evils of sexual immorality, including such sins as sodomy (or homosexuality) and so-called “transgenderism” (a person who wants to change his or her God-given gender or sex into the opposite). Of course, every Christian reader knows that all of these and many other sins are wrong and sinful.
While much that the Democrat party stands for and promotes is ungodly and wrong, is the Republican Party much better? Perhaps there are more professing Christians therein, still we know that this political party leaves much to be desired. If you were living in many of the countries of the world, you will know that there is much—very much—that is non-Christian (even evil) that is going on. If you were living in a Communist nation, or an Islamic nation (especially if you had Sharia Law), or in most (or all) of the other countries, you will surely know that there is massive non-Christian and wicked aspects that the true Christian must oppose or abstain.
But, to return to America, for example, we wonder whether you or anyone would really say that what they (and you) stand for is truly following the teachings and example of the Lord Jesus. Are Republicans really free from blame in every respect?
Just recently, we were watching an interview that aired on a presumably Republican website that showed three of the leading interviewers interviewing a well-known sodomite (homosexual) activist of a past generation who had contracted a well-known disease at that time (AIDS) that killed so many participants. With much difficulty, this personality was able to overcome both the stigma and the illness and today is able to promote this evil of sodomy. All three interviewers praised this immoral man for his position and his overcoming AIDS. Was this a Christian thing to do? Yet it was considered a positive thing on a well-known Republican network! (I wrote to both the network leader as well as the three “Fox News” interviewers (with no response).
Another computer location (was it CNN?) who employs and promotes a leading sodomite (and we wrote a web article about this—on Anderson Cooper). Yet this was a well-known Democrat website. Was and is this a truly moral “Christian” thing to do? Or was it compromising and evil?
Or consider the present President Joe Biden, or Vice-President Kamala Harris, or other leading Democrats. So far as we know, these leading and outspoken Democrats that hold utterly evil and immoral positions are well-liked by the Party leadership! Think of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and her many utterly evil stances on many positions. (This is not to even discuss the evils of Kamala Harris’ position of headship and leadership, not to speak of her immoral stances. (See such passages as 1 Timothy 2:11-12; 1 Corinthians 11:3; 14:33-37; and others.)
Regretfully, we must say that the Republican Party is not too much better. Yes, some may respond that there are many moral stances that this Party holds, but at least some of the things that we have revealed concerning the Democrat Party above could be said about the Republicans. Also, we must remember that there was past-President Donald Trump with his past sexual immorality, his slander, his pride, and so much more. Yes, he may have stood (publicly) for certain moral issues, but there is no indication that he ever repented of the sins that we have just mentioned. In fact, we think that many in the leadership and the following even in this Party is involved in sexual immorality (such as remarriage, and the like) or has been so involved. We find this sadly regretful—and sinful. In fact, all of this is an abomination to God.
As for Fox News that some may assume is Christian, hopefully we were able to dispel this in our reference to the sodomite stance above. Further, it has been pointed out that the station is owned by a well-known “Liberal” (Rupert Murdock) thus we should not expect a thoroughly-Christian stance on anything.
If the American Democrat Party is evil and to be rejected and if the Republican Party is wicked and to be rejected (and the Independents surely must shoulder some of the blame), what is left? Although we won’t be discussing the various worldwide options (such as the evil of Communist China, the wickedness of Russia, the hatred and belligerence of Iran, the malevolence of North Korea, and others), we know that they are non-Christian to the core.
What is the consistent Christian who genuinely follows Jesus supposed to do? If the Republican Party or the Democrat Party in the United States does have massive negatives and if all of the other nations also have a great amount of depressing features, what is the American follower of Christ to do? (And, we might add, what is the Christian living in other nations of the world to do?)
We know of no better thing than to refer to the passages that we cited earlier—such as John 18:36; Romans 12:9-21; and 1 Thessalonians 5:15. Of course, there would be many other Biblical passages but this should occupy our attention and should answer our questions about Christianity and politics. Let us be consistent in our commitment to Christ Jesus, the non-resistant, non-political, Prince of Peace!
