The American Election Reveals Rebellion

The American Election Reveals Rebellion

As we all know, political elections do reveal the heart of those who vote for one candidate over another. It is sometimes hard to know whether the position of one person is better than that of another. One political party may vote for a candidate that holds to a particular position and the other party refuses to vote for the same person because of the position that he or she holds. The Christian just may not know which is the better choice, especially since the issues involve so many conflicting ideas. Perhaps this is one reason why it is better to follow the non-political (apolitical) position of the early Christians.

But there are some issues that are more clear-cut, involving matters of obedience or disobedience to God. For instance, if someone promotes (or allows for) the killing of babies in the womb (as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama did), it would be a clear matter of right and wrong. But we would all agree that not every position is this plain. Some are plainly ambiguous.

Today we read a newspaper article entitled, “Midterm Elections are Showing the Faces of Change.” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, November 4, 2018). The piece begins with this revealing statement: “In the 2018 midterm elections, diversity has become a political movement.” I don’t know about you, but when I read the term, “diversity,” I become quite negative since the term has come to be associated with so many sinful and immoral causes. But “diversity” is what this election is all about.

The article goes on to claim, “An unprecedented number of women, people of color, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender candidates are now running for Congress and governor, according to a New York Times analysis.” Probably most of our readers will agree with me that God is “color blind” and doesn’t prefer one color or nationality over another. But we become concerned when we read further.

Those who take the Scriptures seriously, wonder what the implications are regarding the women who are running for political office. We say this in light of the fact that women are not to be equal participants with the man. As God says, “
Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:3). This basic principle has very much to do with those who wish to govern other people, whether in the political arena or in the home or anywhere else. God our Creator says that the man is the “head” of the woman. Is this hard to understand? No, not at all. But it may be hard to accept. (See also 1 Corinthians 11:4-16; 14:33-37; 1 Timothy 2:8-15; 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9; Titus 2:4-6; 1 Peter 3:1-7.)

For those who do respect God’s order in creation and in society, it should not be difficult to accept 1 Corinthians 11:3 and similar passages. Of course, God is not at all saying that the man is “better” than the woman! Not at all. Many, many women are “better” or more godly, more moral, or more righteous than their male counterparts. But the woman is not to be “head” over the man in any way. Regardless of what God’s Word says, a woman like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (a Democrat) boldly announced, “Women like me aren’t supposed to run for office” (Ibid). But she plans to run, nonetheless!

As noted above, the article also says that lesbians, gays (we prefer “sodomites,” named after the sin of Sodom in Genesis 18-19), bisexual (those who commit sexual acts with both genders), and transgenders (those men who want to be female, dress as females, and perhaps even have surgery to alter their outward sexual makeup. The same is true of women who want to be accepted as men. Apparently these sexually immoral and perverted people are running in elections at unprecedented numbers. The article claims that 26 men and women perverts are running for office! At one time, such people kept to their closets, but today they openly display their perversion! (Jeremiah 6:15)

Whatever the outcome of the present campaign and political contest, the changing scene in America is pronounced. More and more we will no doubt find utter disregard of God’s plain and authoritative commands. What is the Christian to do? Let us not be swayed by public opinion. Let’s not change our views in light of the changing scene in the United States. Remember, when society becomes darker and darker, those in the light will have an even greater impact.

We are to be “children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15). As the culture becomes darker, the Christian’s light will shine even brighter!
