Richard Hollerman
We probably need to settle once and for all the meaning of “abortion.” It is a term that technically means the elimination or killing of an unborn baby. But here we want to explore the fact that there seems to be a earnest attraction to this sin and we are speaking of millions upon millions in America as well as additional hundreds of millions around the world.
There are many aspects to this sin that we should discuss but at least we should establish that God is against the killing of a baby or the slaying of an infant. It is quite clear that the follower of Christ should never be guilty of killing another human being, including an infant (Romans 1:29; Revelation 21:8). When one murders an infant, God will also kill that person and hold him accountable for the wickedness involved (cf. Romans 1:32).
We have discussed abortion elsewhere on the website: www.Truediscipleship.com. Instead of using “abortion,” which is not found in Scripture, we prefer to use the descriptive way to refer to it by saying that so and so kills another person. Thus, when a man or woman kills a baby, we know that they have committed murder or a killing. Again, we know that this is not a welcome term today, especially since most do not value life and do not hold to Scripture, but we all know that God’s Word prohibits this.
We suppose that you (our reader) may wonder, whom does God hold accountable? We find several possibilities and perhaps all of them are guilty in their own way:
The father. Yes, he is personally responsible for not only fathering the child but also for the guilt of having something to do the murder with the birth.
The mother. We assume that unless there was a “rape” involved where a man forces himself on a woman, the mother herself is guilty. Generally, she arranges for the killing and is responsible for it.
The physician or doctor. Although he (or she) didn’t cause the killing, he or she participates in this slaughter and arranges for the killing. He or she actually puts the child to death.
We might include any “nurses” involved (for they are there by design) and the hospital, for generally this institution arranges for this dastardly deed.
If this killing has been committed, we know that under certain circumstances the parents or friends have encouraged this killing too. They may have urged the mother or father to commit the abortion! (In one way of looking at this, they may feel that the family has been humiliated, or the woman has been disgraced, or the society is partly to blame.
We know that those people from different backgrounds have different views on abortion or the killing of a baby’s life. There would be whites, and blacks, and Hispanics, as well as Asians, and others. There would be young, old, and others. There would be people from different economic backgrounds, and there would be people of different religions.
We also know that as the education level rises, so does the approval of killing babies. In some cases, the education is high and in some cases, it would be low. Many professors or teachers in high school as well as college and the university level, would approve of the killing of babies. And females would be more approving of killing babies than men. We find this strange for one would think that the woman, the gentle sex, would be more mindful of a child’s propensity toward life.
Further, we know that the spiritually inclined person (or the church-going person) would be more inclined to respect life and death in a child. This is what we find:
About three-quarters of White evangelical Protestants (74%) think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.
By contrast, 84% of religiously unaffiliated Americans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, as do 66% of Black Protestants, 60% of White Protestants who are not evangelical, and 56% of Catholics. (https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/#CHAPTER-h-views-on-abortion-2021-a-detailed-look).
From this information, we discover that three fourths of white evangelical Protestants would disapprove of the killing, but 84 percent of those who are not religious would endorse the killing of babies, 66% of black Protestants would approve of this, 60% of liberal Protestants, and 56% of Catholics would endorse the killing of babies. So sad! But this is modern life—in America.
As to political party, we find this information:
Six-in-ten Republicans and those who lean toward the Republican Party (60%) say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. By contrast, 80% of Democrats and those who lean toward the Democratic Party say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
Thus, a bit more than half of Republicans would oppose abortion but most Democrats would approve of this procedure. We also find this to be sad. It would seem that Republics (who oppose abortion) would be much more conservative than Democrats who would approve of wiping out the baby, regarding 4 in 5 people.
Then we might want to ask about party affiliation and their views on the Conservative Republicans and Republican leaners are far more likely to say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases than to say that it should be legal (72% vs. 27%). Among moderate and liberal Republicans, 60% say abortion should be legal, while 38% say it should be illegal.
The vast majority of liberal Democrats and Democratic leaners support legal abortion (90%), as do seven-in-ten conservative and moderate Democrats (72%). [believe in] killing of babies. https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/#CHAPTER-h-views-on-abortion-2021-a-detailed-look
What about gender or sex? This is what we find:
Majorities of both men and women express support for legal abortion, though women are somewhat more likely than men to hold this view (63% vs. 58%). https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/#CHAPTER-h-views-on-abortion-2021-a-detailed-look
Thus, according to these statistics (and they may be wrong on occasion), a slight amount more of women than men would approving of killing babies. Keep in mind, this is not at all related to God and His Word, but modern culture, particularly in the United States.
When it comes to racial differences, we find this:
Majorities of adults across racial and ethnic groups express support for legal abortion. About three-quarters of Asian (74%) and two-thirds of Black adults (68%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, as do 60% of Hispanic adults and 59% of White adults.
This would say that most Asians and about 2/3 of blacks, as well as over half of Hispanics and whites, would say that abortion is permissible. Thus, most people would approve of killing babies in some cases.
And we now come to age. This is what we discover:
Among adults under age 30, 74% say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, as do 62% of adults in their 30s and 40s. Among those in their 50s and early 60s, 55% express support for legal abortion, as do 54% of those ages 65 and older. (https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/#CHAPTER-h-views-on-abortion-2021-a-detailed-look).
From this, we find that the older a person is, the less approval of killing babies and vice versa would also be true.
As far as education Two-thirds of college graduates (66%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, as do 63% of those with some college education. Among those with a high school degree or less education, 54% say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 44% say it should be illegal in all or most cases.
What does this mean? Even in America, we find that half or more than half of adults would approve of killing babies. We find this so sad. Actually, we doubt that this would be the case 100 or 200 years ago, but time does change people and time does change things. We know that religion changes the situation, as does whether a person is conservative or liberal, and whether a person is white or back, or what ethnic background a person may have. We are not living 100 or 200 years ago, but in the present and this has to do with our perspective on the killing of babies.
We observe that more and more, the nation is becoming evil and has less respect for life. On the other hand, we think that it may be different in Africa, in Latin America, in the Near East, and other such places. Generally, they would oppose the taking of life—or so we think. We do find it interesting that in such places, where false teaching abounds, we do find a modicum of respect for life or opposition for babies being killed.
Of course, we should go beyond this. We are living in a society in which abortion is part of the way of life that leads to abortion. If a young man and a young woman were to keep themselves pure and free from fornication and the like, they could not become pregnant. We are referring to a normal birth here and not to rape that sometimes (but not frequently) occurs.
Thus, if the parents were truly Christians, who believed in keeping themselves pure and clean before marriage, if they were to commit themselves to keep themselves without blame until marriage, and if they were to be pure as young Christians who love Jesus, then there probably would not be an abortion at all (a murder of a baby).
We know that probably nine months could pass between marriage and a birth, but under unusual circumstances, this could be less than this number of months. Generally, it would be nine or ten months or a year or two or three until a baby comes. And under unusual circumstances, there could be a defect or abnormal birth, which would mean less than nine months. But it is better that we write about normal births here! There would be no abortions under usual circumstances.
We know that there can be exceptions. Instead of six or 10 pounds, there could be very small birthweights. Instead of a normal birth, there could be a Cesarean birth with unusual effects. There could be a blood clot that makes the birth impossible or problematic. Of course, the baby could be very light (such as one or two pounds), necessitating special circumstances. All of these and a dozen others may happen but they are the exception and we are speaking about normal births here. In this case, as we have described, the varieties of births would be few and worthy of discussion.
We are convinced that most births are normal and right. If two people who love each other, if they are both Christians or children of God, if they are pure and without premarital contact, if they have their one and only marriage together, they then could have a son or daughter (or both!) in purity and wholesomeness. They would not have a need for “abortion” and would surely want to avoid murdering their baby!
Is this something that you want and that you are prepared to commit yourself to? Abortion or the killing of a child/baby is wrong and must be avoided. Find a way to please God and find a good pregnancy and birth that pleases Him!
