The Debauchery of America

Frequently we hear that America is one of the most righteous countries in the world. People may go to the founding of the nation in 1776 and conclude this, along with some of the history. However, hopefully, you and I know that the United States is not really godly or Christian by any stretch of the imagination but we do know why this statement is made. When America is “compared” to certain other nations, we see many ways that the country excels and “shines” over them. But we know the dangers of comparisons (2 Corinthians 10:12).

On the other hand, we would need to be blind to fail to see the massive debauchery that is found in this country in so many ways. It would take a blind man to overlook all of this sin! We also know that most “Christians” are really only professing “Christians” and not truly followers of Christ. This truth is found in our purview again and again. Consider this: If we take a nation of the world, we may find a certain amount of evil but when we compare this with Jesus Christ, in all of His purity, righteousness, and holiness, we must say that evil is found in America in abundant measure. In this case, it depends on what we compare something to!

I was just pondering this recently, especially since Afghanistan is much in the news these days. In the past, we learned that over 99 percent of the citizens of this country are involved in false religion. Wouldn’t you say that this is an amazingly high amount? In fact, it may be the most saturated nation regarding false religion! We also know that Afghanistan is the world’s greatest producer of illegal drugs (such as opium)—and that this would be sold and consumed by such countries as America. On these two counts alone (false religion and the evil of drugs) we must observe that this country is evil above measure. We know that this would be denied but the facts support this claim and this cannot be overlooked.

But you may ask, “I thought that you were going to write about “the debauchery of America” and not the evil of Afghanistan! We do this since we wanted to show how empty this boast is. Ask any citizen of this well-known nation and they could cite many instances of America’s debauchery. Debauchery means “extreme indulgence in sensual pleasure; dissipation.” To debauch means “to corrupt morally” or “dissipation.” (See The American Heritage College Dictionary)

Using this definition, we believe that most of our readers will agree that America (in many ways) is involved in “debauchery” or “dissipation.” But, as we continue to observe, we can also see that Afghanistan is also wicked. Think of the murder, the rape, the deceit, the lying, and so many other sins that are freely indulged in! So, while we must agree that America (and many other countries of the world) is debauched, in another respect, Afghanistan is also (in another way).

This is no small matter. While it is surely true that America is under God’s judgment and will be condemned, we must say the same about this country in the Middle-East. While most of those residing in America are surely under God’s judgment, surely nearly all of the citizens of Afghanistan also are.

Just today or yesterday, I was noticing a secular magazine. For instance, we read an article entitled, “Good news of the week.” One would expect really good news, isn’t this right? We long for “good news” and finally we assume that we have found it! Instead, it is evil news. Since this is a secular magazine, it is interpreting the “news” according to evil standards.

We read this: “U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will permit nonbiological and nongestational parents to pass their U.S. citizenship to their children born abroad as of Aug. 5, in a win for LGBTQ families among others” (Time, August 23/August 30). Is this really “good news”? No, it is the opposite—but it does show how debauched America is, that they can call something that is evil to be something good! I am reminded of God’s words found in Isaiah 5: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter or sweet and sweet for bitter!” (5:20).

In the same article, under the heading, “Olympic pride,” first, we know that pride will send a person to hell, right (Romans 1:30)? Four short examples are found under this heading. We read that “a record 183 out LGBTQ athletes completed in the Tokyo Olympics,” representing “at least 30 countries.”

For example, Nesthy Petecio said, “this fight is also for the LGBTQ community.” (The announcement makes it uncertain whether this person is really a man or a woman!) Then there was Tim Daley “the openly gay [sodomite] British diver” who participated. Instead of shame, this contender is boasting of his perversion! Then there was “Quin,” “the first transgender and nonbinary Olympic athlete to receive a medal of any kind” (Time, August 23/August 30, 2021). A “transgender” would be a man impersonating a woman or a woman impersonating a man! Isn’t this sexual perversion of a radical kind?

All of this shows that America and other English-speaking participants have shown themselves to be utterly perverse and evil! What do you think that faithful Muslims think of this? We have already mentioned that virtually all Muslims are under God’s wrath, but what about the examples of perversion above? You might say that sexually immoral people (such as that above) are guilty of sexual perversion thus are under God’s righteous judgment. Yes, that is right. But what about those who reject the true and living God and resort to false religion? Do you see what we mean by saying that the whole world is rejected by the true and living God and under His righteous judgment? Perversion of religion or sexual perversion—both are evil in God’s sight!

Let’s agree that people around the world are in desperate need of God’s mercy! I have no idea of the numbers or percentages, but if 90 percent, or 95 percent, or 99 percent of Americans are objectively under the Lord’s righteous judgment because of their guilt, couldn’t we say the same? We’ve already alluded to the fact that over 99 percent of the citizens are involved in massive amounts of unrighteousness. Thus, whether we are speaking of 90 percent, or 95 percent, or 99 percent of people are under their unforgiven sin, still we must ask, “How many sins does it take to condemn a person?”

Whoever you may be, we encourage you to come to Christ and don’t rely on your false religion or wicked life. Repent of your sin today and humble yourself under the truth of Almighty God. He will accept you and you may find complete forgiveness through His grace if you are willing to do this! Please come today!
