Harrison Ford and His Spiritual Indifference

Many of you who are reading these words have some interest in God and His will for your life. Hopefully, you even seek His truth in Scripture and maybe you go further in your quest. However, this is not the way that many or even most others view spiritual things. One of these people would be Harrison Ford, the famous actor whom many people have followed in his many movies and in his personal life.

We know that there must be some of our readers who adore this mega-actor (Harrison Ford) and see all of his movies. What do we discover about his spiritual background and beliefs? We must begin with Ford’s morality and this inevitably leads to his marriages. Could it be that he has followed the Biblical mandate of one man with one woman—for life?  Or has he followed another way of life? Let’s examine this.

Ford has been married three times over the years. He has four biological children and one adopted child. He was first married to Mary Marquardt from 1964 until their divorce in 1979. They had two sons, chef and restaurateur Benjamin (born 1966) and clothier Willard (born 1969). Benjamin co-owns Ford’s Filling Station, a gastropub with locations at L.A. Live in Los Angeles and Terminal 5 in Los Angeles International Airport. Willard is the owner of Strong Sports Gym, and was co-owner of the Kim Sing Theater and owner of the Ludwig Clothing company.

Ford’s second marriage was to screenwriter Melissa Mathison from March 1983 until their divorce in late 2000. They had a son, actor and musician Malcolm (born 1987), and a daughter, actress Georgia (born 1990). Then Ford began dating actress Calista Flockhart after they met at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards. They are the parents of Liam (born 2001), the son she adopted before meeting Ford. He proposed to Flockhart over Valentine’s Day weekend in 2009. They married on June 15, 2010, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Ford was filming Cowboys & Aliens.

Ford and Flockhart live on an 800-acre (320-hectare) ranch in Jackson, Wyoming, on which he has lived since the 1980s and approximately half of which he has donated as a nature reserve. They also retain a base in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. He is known as one of Hollywood’s most private actors, guarding much of his personal life. In her 2016 autobiography The Princess Diarist, his co-star Carrie Fisher claimed that she and Ford had a three-month affair in 1976 during the filming of Star Wars.

In 2009, Ford signed a petition calling for the release of film director Roman Polanski, who had been arrested in Switzerland in relation to his 1977 charge for drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl.

As for his finances, Ford’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $230 million as of 2020 (https://wealthygorilla.com/harrison-ford-net-worth/

The most important fact that we can note is Ford’s interest or lack of interest in spiritual things. As we earlier noted, he has been involved in movies for years, since his teen years, but has he ever made time for the Lord or things of the Lord?

We know of none. While he has been deeply involved in many movies, with many people, and has been involved in many different awards, there is no indication that he has had any interest in God. He has had two or three vehicle crashes—airplane and car, but still he seems to have little or no interest in spiritual things.

Religiously, it is true that Ford claims to be a Jew. But has he followed through with this religion? (https://www.beliefnet.com/celebrity-faith-database/f/harrison-ford.aspx). Not at all. But we read this about his early upbringing:

“[I] have Jewish mother and a Catholic father,” Ford said at a roundtable interview for THE CALL OF THE WILD. “They were very interested in giving me a moral context.” (https://www.movieguide.org/news-articles/why-harrison-ford-credits-his-parents-for-giving-him-a-moral-compass.html.

This is something else that we learn:

Ford doesn’t seem very religious at all. Imagine Han Solo in Star Wars. He wasn’t to into “the force” and Indiana Jones was more interested in the historical value of the trinkets and mysteries he sought and less with their religious significance. These characters (though obviously not Harrison Ford) end up as accurate representations of the man who played them. Ford spoke of his Midwestern upbringing, saying:

We don’t talk about religion or politics or how much money we make.2

And when it comes to his religious upbringing, Ford defaults to politics. His family raised him a “Democrat,” not any conventional religion. He says:

Instead we were given Democrat instruction; to be liberals of every stripe. I don’t judge what other people do. At least I try not to ever judge what other people do unless they do it in my face.3

Ford has no interest in the God of the Bible. This is what He has to say:

“For me, the complexity of nature is proof of the existence of what serves me as a god,” he explained. “I admit that there are many gods in the world, and I’m happy that everybody has found something to believe in above themselves and organize some kind of morality around. But nature is my god, yes.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/harrison-ford-on-conservation-nature-is-my-god/2017/09/29/40c8fa86-a53c-11e7-ade1-76d061d56efa_story.html).

We find it utterly sad. Ford is now 78 years of age and surely he doesn’t have long for this world, especially in light of his numerous accidents. What will he say to God the Creator one day? How will explain his three wives? And his other exploits? And his disinterest in the Lord and His will? And how will he deal with his avoidance of the Word of God?  We have read of his interest in the Dali Lama and also of Judaism, but this will in no way save him from himself! If anything, his lack of interest in God and His way of life will condemn him. How sad!

Reader, I beg of you to think about your own life and your responsibility before God, the Creator of the Universe. Think about the crucified and risen Savior. Won’t you come to God while there is yet time and opportunity?
