A secular culture that is both perverted and immoral in this great nation of America

Richard Hollerman

Today I was reading a notice relating to the election results. I refer to the election that was held November 3, on Tuesday. But we read a startling article that has this as its title: “US elects first trans state senator and first black gay congressmen” (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/04/us-elects-first-trans-state-senator-and-first-black-gay-congressman).

Maybe you are like me, thinking that this represents the depth of depravity and shows the wickedness that is now found in the United States of America. However, I then began to reconsider my first thoughts. Yes, these two examples are bad but there are many other examples of sin in our culture. It is true that this sort of gross evil would not have been found 50 years ago in this nation, but what about other expressions of public sin?

Probably it is right to condemn this example of open sin in America. Neither of these sins should ever be found in this country that presents itself as a light to other nations in the world. Yet, deep in our heart, we know that other people among the hundreds of congressmen (or congresswomen) also have sin that condemns them before the burning eyes of our Holy God.

We must not conclude that McBride in Delaware and Ritchie Torres in New York are 100% evil and worthy of God’s judgment while the hundreds of other legislators in the country are unworthy of blame. No, Scripture says, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). We also read, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (3:23). Not only Torres and McBride are guilty and “worthy of death” (Romans 1:32) but all of us are! You and me!

This is what we read in the liberal newspaper, “The Guardian”:

A deeply polarised US electorate has given the country its first transgender state senator and its first black gay congressman – but also its first lawmaker to have openly supported the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory.

All four members of the “progressive squad” of Democratic congresswomen of colour – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib – have been comfortably re-elected, and Sarah McBride’s victory in Delaware has made her the highest-ranking trans official in the US.

“I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too,” McBride, 30, who easily defeated the Republican Steve Washington to represent Delaware’s first senate district, tweeted after the election was called.

McBride, a former spokesperson for the LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, was a trainee in the White House during the Obama administration and became the first trans person to speak at a major political convention when she addressed Democrats in Philadelphia in 2016.

“For Sarah to shatter a lavender ceiling in such a polarising year is a powerful reminder that voters are increasingly rejecting the politics of bigotry in favour of candidates who stand for fairness and equality,” said Annise Parker of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, which trains and supports out candidates.

In Vermont, Taylor Small, 26, has become the state’s first openly transgender legislator after winning 41% of the vote to make it to the House of Representatives, making her the fifth “out” trans state legislator in the US.

Small, who is the health and wellness director at the Pride Centre of Vermont, told LGBTQ Nation last month she saw victory “not as a historic moment for myself, but more of a historic moment for the community”.

Are there any sexual perverts in congress or other civil positions? Yes, we read this:

In Kansas Stephanie Byers looks set to become the state’s first transgender legislator by winning a state House seat. “We’ve made history here,” Byers, who is also of Native American descent, said on Tuesday evening. “We’ve done something in Kansas most people thought would never happen, and we did it with really no push-back, by just focusing on the issues.”

Parker said that with so few transgender people in elected office, nearly every win “is a historic one. With each barrier broken comes more trans people inspired to do the same. Even pro-equality states like Vermont need trans voices in government.”

Ritchie Torres, 32, a city councillor, will be the first Afro-Latino gay member of the US Congress after comfortably capturing New York’s 15th district, ranked on the Cook political report’s Partisan Voter Index as the most Democratic district in the country.

It is probably good that we “judge with righteous judgment” (John 7:24) and not just conclude that the other person is guilty, leaving us as innocent. No, we are all guilty and deserve God’s condemnation. None of us is able to avoid the righteous judgment of God (cf. Romans 2:2, 5). We can seek God’s forgiveness and thereby avoid His wrath, but let’s remember that we do deserve God’s condemnation and if it were not for His grace and the redemption of Christ, we would still be under His condemnation.

This is the report on Torres:

Democratic New York City Councilman Ritchie Torres is projected to become the first openly gay, Afro-Latino member of Congress after winning one of the country’s most Democratic-leaning House seats.

The Associated Press called the race at 10 p.m. EST.

Torres, who fought a contested primary against a broad field that included a powerful pro-Trump Democrat, ran virtually unopposed in Tuesday’s general election.

New York’s 15th District is rated by the Cook Political Report’s Partisan Voter Index as a D+44, making it the most Democratic district in America. (https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/523675-ritchie-torres-to-become-first-openly-gay-afro-latino-member-of-congress

What can we do? At this point, what are we to so? First, I would never want to call a person who claims the wrong gender as a pervert if he does not meet this description. For example, iIf a man is a man and not a woman, let’s refuse to refer to John as “Jane”—a “transgender.” And let’s not refer to a Jane as a normal woman, but let’s openly speak of Jane as a woman who is an open pervert—a woman who claims one gender but is actually another gender. Let’s use our words carefully, always refusing to lie about a person’s gender. It is time that we become a “light” to others so that they might know that there are some in this country who refuse to condone this moral debacle but speak the truth about gender and sexuality (Ephesians 4:15, 25).

Secondly, let’s not assume that everyone in Delaware, New York, or Kansas are sexual perverts. Just as there were 8 righteous people on earth when God destroyed the world at the time of Noah (1 Peter 3:20), we know that there are some—perhaps a few—who seek to walk in their integrity and in morality. Let us judge righteously and not condemn all from a certain locality (Genesis 18:24).

Third, let’s also realize that of the hundreds of congressmen who are apparently not sexually perverted, there surely are many who commit unspeakable wickedness in many other ways. Think of the men and women who may not be “transgender” or “sodomite,” but they are feminists, liars, greedy, unbelieving, drunkards, fornicators, adulterers, twice married, or follow false teachings of various kinds (cf. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Romans 1:29-31; 2 Timothy 3:1-4). These too are under God’s judgment even though they may not be perverted in the way we have been discussing.

Fourth, we know that there are many dozens of women who are feminists (and refuse to be truly feminine) in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Of course, these also are an abomination before God. Think of the Supreme Court and the number of feminists who have served there. One has just been appointed within the past weeks. And think of the woman (Kamala Harris) who will either be the next Vice-president (or possibly next President!). (This is still undecided at the time of our writing but it looks like Harris will be voted in.) Surely, in light of 1 Corinthians 11:3; 14:33-37; 1 Timothy 2:11-15; etc., this would be an abomination before our holy God!

Finally, we know that there surely are vast numbers of congressmen who follow all kinds of false religions. How many Catholics are there? How about Muslims? And how about the many who follow various false ways that keep them away from God and His kingdom? This may not make the front page of the newspaper, but this also would keep a person away from both the truth and the ways of God.

We think that it is past time for us to “judge with righteous judgment” and not just blindly proceed into a cultural assessment of what we find in the world, including what we see in the political realm. Let us refuse to allow the world to “squeeze” us into the mold of the world (cf. Romans 12:1-2). Let us view things—all things—from the viewpoint of God our Creator!

We grieve that our view of all of this is so negative, however conservative Christians will definitely see what is happening in society and label it as an abomination. We also want to acknowledge that there are many places on earth in which public persons are also living false and abominable lives. May God grant such people repentance. However, thankfully, some places do seek to be more holy in the ways we have been discussing and refuse to indulge in this type of foolishness and wickedness. They are aware that sodomy, lesbianism, transgenderism, and like would be grieving to our righteous God and Creator.
