Cigars and Whisky for Longevity?

In today’s newspaper we read of the oldest World War II veteran who spends his days in Austin sitting on his porch. Richard Overton, age 110, received donations of $85,500 to keep him in his house for another six months, which will pay for his 24 hour care. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, January 7, 2017)

When asked about why he has lived to such a “ripe, old age,” Everton tells us why he thinks he reached age 110. He said that he considers “cigars and whisky” as the “secrets to his long life.” Interesting, quite interesting.

If you follow the health news and advice in the newspapers, magazines, radio, and TV, you probably can see through this aged man’s belief. You are aware that the use of tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Further, you are also aware of the detrimental effects of whisky to the human body. Overton is dead wrong. We might be able to say that both God’s mercy as well as good genes have had a positive effect on his longevity—but it surely wasn’t cigars and whisky!

Maybe this should teach us something. Not everything that a person believes is correct! Some people think that they will live eternally because of their commitment to Hinduism or their belief in Muhammad. Others think if they consume a certain nostrum, tonic, or remedy, they will hold off disease and death. Still others are convinced if they visit some medical quack or questionable practitioner, they will find the “fountain of youth.” But we should be aware that there are multiple questions to life’s problems, but nearly all of them are wrong. Billions of people believe the wrong things and follow a path that leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14).

No, cigars and whisky are not health-promoting and are not longevity enhancing. Similarly, there is only one way to eternal life! Jesus declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6). While advocates of cigars and cigarettes may be wrong, Jesus our Lord and Savior will never be wrong! He is the one and only way!
