The Perversions of Religious Libertarianism
in the United Church of Christ Denomination

Richard Hollerman

If you have followed the religious news in this country, you are aware that a number of the mainline liberal Protestant denominations have acquiesced to the secular society in accepting sexual immorality of various kinds. Many denominations, including more conservative ones, are permitting adultery (after remarriage). Studies reveal that evangelical denominations have the same rate of divorce as the secular society. Such studies also show that many denominations have a very high rate of premarital relations among the young people.

But let’s speak of the more perverted forms of sexual expression in the world today and how mainline denominations are bowing the knee to these forms of sexual decadence. We are amazed at how extensive this sexual immorality is. We know that this is true in the Episcopal Church with the ordination of a sodomite bishop and acceptance of homosexuality in various ways. It is true of the United Methodist Church. The Lutheran Church in America is another denomination that has capitulated to the secular acceptance of nearly all forms of sexual perversion. Even a leading Baptist Church in Fort Worth, in the traditional “Bible Belt,” extends their welcome to homosexual couples. The United Church of Christ (not to be confused with the Church of Christ) also accepts people who are practicing sexual immorality in various forms.

Does it ever make you wonder what Martin Luther would say about Lutheran homosexuality, what Jonathan Edwards would think of United Church of Christ sodomy, what John Bunyan would think of Baptist homosexuality, and what John Wesley would say about Methodist homosexuality. “Times are changing” and this change is often for the worse!

I just completed a presentation that described the United Church of Christ’s welcome of sodomite and others who are involved in perverse sexuality. The Coalition for LGBT Concerns is the voice for these openly sinful perverts. In case you are wondering, LGBT refers to “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual.”

The presentation shows the welcome that the denomination known as the United Church of Christ gives to these people who flaunt their sinful lifestyle. Although not a department in the denomination itself, this coalition is an organization of United Church of Christ members that caters to and advances the cause of these sexually immoral people. It makes no matter whether one is a female sodomite, a male sodomite, a person who has sex with a man and a woman, a woman who pretends that she is a man, or a man who pretends that he is a woman—all of these people who openly flaunt their sinful sexual choices are welcome. It would be one thing if the denomination sought to bring these members to repentance and pointed out that unrepentant sexual sin results in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8) and God’s righteous wrath (Ephesians 5:3-7), but this coalition endorses and supports these unrepentant fornicators!

As I went to other websites recommended, one can see that these ones do have their problems. One woman describes the problem of entering men’s restroom, wondering if they would recognize that she was a woman, but the additional problem she had in entering the women’s restroom where she belonged, wondering if the women would suspect that she was a man. Many feel rejected by society since they are “different” but equal. Another point noticed is that the suicide rate of transsexual persons is much higher than the normal population. The coalition seeks to help young people to “accept” and celebrate their orientation, even if this involves gross immorality.

Several thoughts came to my mind as I noticed this attempted justification of various sexual perversions. First, there is the attempt to make these ones who are guilty of sexual perversion to feel “normal” and “accepted” in this denomination and in society at large. The Christian knows that this is a sinful purpose. God doesn’t want those guilty of unrepentant sin to feel “normal” about their immoral orientation and accepted by any church. Paul says that homosexuals receive” in their own persons the due penalty of their error” (Romans 1:28). This may indicate that in the very personality of the sodomite is affected by his perversion. God gives a conscience to each of us to “accuse” us if we do wrong. This sexual coalition is seeking to make sinners feel comfortable in their immorality. God calls on sinners to repent and “forsake” their sin.

Second, there is a degrading of the Scriptures to accommodate their perverted lifestyle. One transsexual recommended an article by an Episcopalian priest entitled, “Episcopalians and the Bible.” The author demeans the attempt to take the Bible literally. He says that the Bible is not inerrant and infallible. Supposedly this man who is pretending to be a woman (a transvestite) thinks that this Episcopal perspective will allow those who are sexually immoral to feel comfortable in their perverted lifestyle. Scripture says, “He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD” (Proverbs 17:15). To “justify” those who are guilty of gross sin is an abomination to God, especially when this is done while distorting the holy Scriptures (2 Peter 3:16).

Third, those denominations that seek to justify sexual immorality invariably label Bible-believing people as “narrow minded,” “Bible bigots,” “Bible thumpers,” or “fundamentalist fanatics.” They slander those who take God seriously when he condemns homosexuality, fornication, adultery, and like sexual sins. They make these people along with fundamentalist and evangelical churches look “behind the times” and “intolerant” of modern ideas. In reality, those who accept the Bible’s condemnation of all sin (including sexual perversion) are being faithful to the God who inspired the Scriptures.

Fourth, homosexual churches and those churches that tolerate open sodomy, transvestism, bisexuality, and every other perversion are unworthy of the “Christian” label. Christian means one who follows Christ or belongs to Christ. Jesus condemned lust and adultery (Matthew 5:27-32; 19:9). He said that both fornication (of which sexual perversion would be one type) and adultery defile a man (Mark 7:21-23). In no way would our holy Savior endorse or promote unholy sexual orientations, relationships, and activity.

These are several of the reasons why the United Church of Christ denomination is guilty of gross sin that is unworthy of any group that would claim to have anything to do with the Lord Jesus. This would be true of the Episcopal Church, the Lutheran Church in America, the United Methodist Church, and others that tolerate and even accept sodomites and all others who practice sexual perversion. Those denominations that promote these deviations will incur the greater judgment.
