The Law of God

The Law of God

Questions are often raised in our day: What was the Law of God?  Why did God give the Law through Moses?  To whom was the Law given?  What was God’s purpose in giving the Law?  Are we under the Law of Moses today?  How should Christians in general look upon the Law?  How should Gentile Christians view the Law?  Are we to obey the commands of God in our age?  The following points are offered for your study of the Scriptures.  Please make the effort to look up all of the passages cited to assure a firm grasp of this important subject.

BEFORE THE CROSS

The Law of God

  • The Law of Yahweh was perfect, right, pure, and true (Psalm 19:7-11)
  • The Law of God was to be a way of life (Psalm 119; Deut. 5:31-33; 6:1-3; 8:1-3)
  • The Law is holy, righteous, good, and spiritual (Rom. 7:12, 14, 16; 1 Tim. 1:8)

The Law of God Was Given to Israel

  • Ten commandments given to Israel (Exod. 19:3ff; 20:1-2, 22)
  • Words of the covenant, the 10 commandments (Exod. 34:28; Deut. 4:13; 9:9,11,15; 1 Kgs. 8:9,21; 2 Chron. 5:10; 6:11; Heb. 9:4)
  • Covenant made with Israel (Exod. 34:27-28; Deut. 4:23; 5:1-3; 8:11; 29:1; 2 Chron. 5:10; 6:11; Exod. 24:7-8)
  • Law of Moses commanded for Israel (Mal. 4:4; Deut. 33:4)
  • Statutes and ordinances given to Israel (Ezek. 20:10-13)
  • Sabbath given to Israel (Exod. 31:13, 16-17; Deut. 5:15; Ezek. 20:12, 20)

Purpose of the Mosaic Law or First Covenant

  • Gives the knowledge of sin (Rom. 3:19-20; 5:20; 7:7-13; 1 John 3:4; Gal. 3:19, 22)
  • Speaks of Jesus the Messiah (Luke 24:26-27; 44; John 5:39, 46)
  • Meant to lead the Jew to Christ (Gal. 3:22-25)
  • Given for our instruction (Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:1-12; cf. 9:9-10; 1 Tim. 5:18)
  • Brings death (2 Cor. 3:7; Rom. 7:9), wrath (Rom. 4:15), condemnation (2 Cor. 3:9)
  • First Covenant conditional (Exod. 19:5; Deut. 28:1-2,9,13,15,45-48; 30:16-18; Jer. 11:2-5)

AFTER THE CROSS

How Should We View the Mosaic Law Today?

  • We die to the Law through Christ’s death (Rom. 7:4)
  • We are released from the Law (Rom. 7:6)
  • We are not under the Law (Rom. 6:14-15)
  • Requirements of the Law fulfilled in us (Rom. 8:4)
  • Law and Prophets fulfilled (Matt. 5:17-19)
  • Old covenant fades away (2 Cor. 3:11)
  • Law given until Christ came (Gal. 3:19)
  • Not under the tutor of the Law (Gal. 3:23-25)
  • No longer to keep days, months, seasons, and years (Gal. 4:9-11)
  • Christ abolished in His flesh the law of commandments (Eph. 2:14-15)
  • Food, drink, festivals, new moons, Sabbath day only a shadow (Col. 2:16-17; Heb. 10:1)
  • Law made nothing perfect (Heb. 7:19)
  • We are children of the New covenant, not Old (Gal. 4:21-31)
  • Deeds of the Law cannot declare us righteous (Rom. 3:20, 28; Gal. 2:16,21; 3:10-13; Phil. 3:9)
  • Sacrifices of the Law could not take away sin (Heb. 9:12-15; 10:1-4, 11)
  • New covenant came; Old covenant obsolete (Heb. 8:7-13)
  • Christ the mediator of the New covenant (Heb. 8:6; 9:15-16; 12:24)
  • Clean and unclean food distinctions gone (Acts 10:10-16; Rom. 14:14-15, 20-21; 1 Tim. 4:3-5; cf. Mark 7:19)
  • Circumcision no longer necessary (Gal. 5:3,6; 6:15; 1 Cor. 7:19; cf. Gal. 2:3; Acts 15:1, 5)

The Teaching of Christ

  • Must obey the commands of Christ (Matt. 28:18-20; John 14:15, 21-24; 15:10, 14)
  • Teaching of the apostles (Acts 2:42; Eph. 2:20)
  • Apostles’ words are Christ’s words (1 Cor. 14:37; 1 Thess. 4:2; 2 Thess. 4:2; 2 Pet. 3:2; Matt. 10:40; John 13:20; cf. Luke 10:40)
  • The law of Christ (1 Cor. 9:20-21; cf. Gal. 6:2)
  • Must obey the commands of God (1 Thess. 4:3; 1 John 2:17; 3:22, 24; Rev. 12:17; 14:12)
  • Now under the “law” or principle of faith in Jesus Christ (cf. Romans 3:27-28; 4:3-8, 9-25; 5:1)
  • Saved by grace through faith, not Law (Eph. 2:8-9; Phil. 3:9; Titus 3:5-7; Rom. 4:16; 11:6)
