Rebelling Against our Creator

Rebelling against our Creator

Richard Hollerman

We all know that there is a massive amount of evidence that God is our Creator—and that includes you and me.  Simply speaking, the creation testifies to the Creator. That which has been made witnesses to the Maker. As the Hebrew writer tells us, “Every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God” (3:4). Just as surely as your house was built by a Builder, so the universe and all things in it has been built by God, the Creator of all.

Yet we must admit that a growing number of people deny this obvious fact. They deny that God created all things. They close their eyes to the words of the Psalmist: “Know that the LORD Himself is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves” (100:3a). As Scripture says, “Your hands made me and fashioned me” (119:73a).

This creative work means that God made you who you are. He chose that you would be born in a particular country of the world as well as the child of your specific father and mother. We also need to acknowledge that your gender was determined by God before you were born. And there is the profound thought that God determined your gender before the foundation of the world (Colossians 1:16-17)!

Has it ever occurred to you that when we reject God’s work in us, we are rejecting God our Creator Himself? If He chose that you would be born a woman, how could you rebel against God’s design? If He determined that you would be a man, how can you reject your masculinity? God is the one who used the X and Y chromosomes to decide your gender and make you either a male or a female.

Today we find many examples of people who rebel against the Creator’s design and plan for their life. Think of several examples:

First, the transgender person rebels against his or her gender and makes efforts to eradicate this.  Transgendered is defined in this way: “Appearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member of the opposite sex” (The American Heritage College Dictionary). A related term is transvestite: “A person who dresses and acts in a style or manner traditionally associated with the opposite sex” (Ibid.).

If God has determined that you be born a male, isn’t it the height of ingratitude and rebellion to undergo surgery to appear as a woman? Isn’t it wrong for such a person to appear as a woman, intentionally act like a woman, and seek to hide one’s identity as a man? Such a person often changes his name to reflect what he would like to be—a woman. Transgenderism is one bizarre way that a minority of men and women today revolt against the Creator and insist on something that He has already fixed for all eternity!

Second, the suicide person rebels against God in seeking to end his or her life by committing suicide. Suicide is “the act or an instance of intentionally killing oneself” (Ibid). We realize that many thousands of Americans take their life each year and many more do so around the world. This is not the unintentional killing of oneself, perhaps in a car accident or in a surgery that fails. We are speaking of a person who voluntarily and purposefully takes his life.

Examples would be the Muslim terrorist who intentionally and knowingly kills himself in order to kill others. It would be the person who has been told that continued drinking will result in cirrhosis of the liver, but he knowingly continues this kind of behavior with the realization that he is killing himself. It would be the person who jeopardizes is life by wild and irresponsible behavior, such as jumping out of an airplane, or driving a motorcycle without a helmet, or indulging in hang gliding, and similar activities.

Suicide has been called “the most selfish act” possible. Man, in his arrogance, chooses to end the life that God has given to him. A man thinks that the life he has been given is not worth living and ends it through his own act of volition. God is the one who gives life and only He has the right to take life. In God “we live and move and exist” (Acts 17:28). God “gives life to all things” (1 Timothy 6:13), and this life is to be forfeited only when God chooses. Suicide is actually “self-murder,” and Scripture says that “no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” (1 John 3:15). Instead of rebelling against God, the originator and giver of life, we must live to honor, obey, serve, and love God our Creator.

Third, the sodomite is one who rebels against his Creator. Many people may fail to see this connection, but it is clear that the homosexual refuses to accept the plan of God for the male/female relationship. At the creation itself, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18). Did God make another man for Adam? No, he created a woman: “Male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27b). After he relates the creation of Eve, the first woman, Moses wrote, “For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh” (2:24).

Some 4,000 years later, the Lord Jesus refers to the Genesis account of creation: “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (Matthew 19:5). Then Jesus comments, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (v. 6). We can see that in homosexuality—whether male or female—people are willing to pervert God’s plan for marriage as one man joined to one woman, for life. It is no wonder that God prescribed the death penalty for homosexuality in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13). He also said that homosexuality involves “degrading passions” that are “unnatural,” and entail “indecent acts” of gross immorality (Romans 1:26-27), with the result that unrepentant homosexuality will bar one from the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Fourth, a man who divorces his wife and marries another woman rejects God’s will and the creation institution of marriage. When a married man rejects his wife and joins himself to another woman, he is rejecting God’s creation institution of marriage. As our Lord says, “I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery” (Matthew 19:9). Jesus elaborated further: “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery” (Luke 16:18; cf. Mark 10:11-12; Romans 7:2-3).

This principle has been violated millions of times over the years in America alone. Perhaps half of all marriages end in divorce, and most remarriages after such a divorce result in adultery (according to the Lord Jesus). We recognize how serious this is in God’s sight for no adulterer or adulteress (apart from repentance) will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; cf. Galatians 5:19-21), but will receive the wrath of God in the lake of fire (Ephesians 5:3-7; Colossians 3:5-7; Hebrews 13:4; Revelation 21:8).

Fifth, abortion also is rebellion against God the Creator. Since God is the giver of life, and “He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things” (Acts 17:25), we can see that taking such life is a serious crime against the life-giving God. When a child is conceived in the woman’s womb, a unique person is formed, brought about by the union of the male sperm with the female ovum. Never before was such a person in existence. Barring a physical abnormality that may cause the death of the pre-born child, that child is intended to be born and live. The Psalmist wrote, “You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:13-14). He knew that a preborn child comes from God’s own plan.

When a mother chooses to kill her baby (“terminate her pregnancy”), she is murdering the unique child that God has made in her womb. Such a child is unlike any other human being. “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). Likewise, every other person born is made in God’s own image and likeness. We destroy the image of God in this child when a mother and her doctor (and perhaps the father) conspire to destroy the life of this unique pre-born baby. Murder of this nature is a particularly heinous one in God’s site.

Sixth, evolution is a chief expression of rebellion against God our Creator. It is obvious that this theory that seeks to explain the existence of all things also seeks to reject the existence and creative work of the Creator. While some inconsistent religionists claim to believe in God and also accept false evolutionary ideas, these explanations of origins really are incompatible.

Scripture (God’s own explanation of origins) clearly says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God’s Word details His creative work on six literal 24-hour days in the beginning (Genesis 1:2-31). The psalmist wrote, “By the word of the LORD, the heavens were made” (Psalm 33:6a); “He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast” (v. 9). The Hebrew writer quotes Psalm 102:25: “You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands” (1:10).

The Lord Jesus also was involved in God’s creative work: “By Him [Christ] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16). Surprisingly, we read that the Lord Jesus continues to uphold all of His creation: “He [Christ] is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (v. 17).

Tens of millions of people in America and hundreds of millions of people worldwide have committed the treasonable act of denying that God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning. Instead, they have substituted a theoretical and incredible “Big Bang” explanation, then combined that with an evolutionary explanation, and expanded history into some 14 billions of years to accommodate this false theory. They have rejected God’s own explanation that he created all things only thousands of years ago and that all life forms are His work, not blind chance, over vast eons of time. Surely this blasphemous teaching of our day is a leading expression of rebellion against God our Creator.

Submitting to God our Creator

We have noticed six of the leading areas in which modern man has dared to rebel against God our Creator. This is high treason against God our Creator, King, and Ruler. Not content with this rebellion, many contemporary people seek to convince others to also join them in this rejection of God. Paul says, “Although they know the ordinances of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them” (Romans 1:32).

By this, we mean that publishers, journalists, and others may promote the killing of a woman’s babies (through abortion). The media may seek to make transgenderism appear normal and natural, although until the last few years everyone knew that this was an unnatural and bizarre expression of sexual rebellion. It has only been during the last several decades that homosexuality in its varied forms has been considered natural and acceptable regardless of its obvious perversion. Modern psychology also has sought to make suicide acceptable and without guilt. Further, only during the last two hundred years has the false theory of evolution become dominant in educational circles to the extent that all public schools now promote this flagrant lie of the enemy of our soul—Satan.

All sin is serious. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a). But it should be obvious that rebelling against the Creator Himself in these and other ways is particularly heinous and blameworthy. It is significant that before the worldwide flood of Noah’s day, “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). Today we are approaching such a godless condition, in which “every intent of the thoughts” of the heart of billions of people are corrupt, perverted, and opposed to the living God.

Will God spare a world that has rejected Him in such a massive scale?  Whether soon or far, God will reject all of those who remain in their sin and reject His mercy by refusing to repent. Does this include you?
