Our Visit to the Creation Museum

A couple weeks ago, my wife Moni and I took a very quick trip to Pennsylvania to see my aged mother as well as my brother, sister and relatives.  It was short but needed, as well as enjoyable.  As we traveled home, through Ohio, we drove through Cincinnati to northern Kentucky, where we came to a place I had read about on many occasions but wondered if I would ever have the opportunity to visit—the “Answers in Genesis” Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky.

I am on the mailing list to receive the monthly creation newsletter, “Answers Update,” a high quality little paper of about 20 pages.  In the past few years, there had been repeated updates on the project they were working on—a large museum that would show the massive evidence for the creation of God as opposed to the lie of evolution.  The organization did complete the project (although they continue to plan for expansions and additions), and I often wondered if I would have the privilege of visiting this center of Biblical creation.  Finally, we did have this opportunity, for which we thank God.

We arrived at the location early on the day before Thanksgiving.  Our visit was accompanied with heavy rain.  In fact, it rained from the beginning when we arrived until we left at the very close of the day, at 6 PM.  For this reason, we couldn’t visit the outside areas—including the Petting Zoo, the camel rides, the butterfly/hummingbird garden, the rainforest, the KOI pond, the carnivorous bog garden, and the lake.  Quite frankly, it was also too cold, thus these areas would have been better for a warm-weather visit.

The Museum itself is a 70,000 square foot edifice.  Inside the Museum, we easily spent all day—from about 9 or 10 in the morning until 6 PM, closing time.  I suppose that a quick walk through the building may have taken 4 hours, but the really interested visitor may want to take one full day or even two days to be exposed to all the displays.

The official written description puts it this way: “The Creation Museum presents a ‘Walk through history.’  Designed by a former Universal Studios exhibit director, this state-of-the-art 70,000-square-foot museum brings the pages of the Bible to life while providing a fully engaging, sensory experience for guests.  Murals and realistic scenery, computer-generated visual effects, dozens of exotic animals, life-sized people and dinosaur animations, and a special-effects theater complete with misty sea breezes and rumbling seats are just some of the impressive exhibits that everyone in your family will enjoy.”

The main level consisted of the main hall, with life-size dinosaurs looming overhead.  Immediately to the left, one comes to the “Stargazer’s  Planetarium.”  My wife and I entered this attraction with much anticipation and were not at all disappointed.  In fact, we were greatly impressed with the display here.  This short planetarium display showed the solar system above us and around us.  It went to the entire Milky Way galaxy, then extended out to the entire known universe.  We had seen two planetarium displays in secular city museums and, sadly, they are based on the atheistic, evolutionary model.  Unlike these unbelieving displays, the Answers in Genesis planetarium was thoroughly creationist and based on the so-called “young earth” model.  The display is available in DVD format for anyone who would like to see what we saw, but without the grandeur of the open sky displayed above the planetarium seats.

Several theaters were scattered around the museum, such as the “Special Effects Theater,” the “Last Adam Theater,” and the “Dragon Theater.”  The most impressive area of the museum was the “Walk Through History.”  This consisted of seven different sections, covering the main themes of the Bible, from creation to Christ.  Imagine walking through a re-created “Garden of Eden,” with life-size models of animals and background recordings that described the scenes and the Biblical account of creation and the fall.  Continuing on, we walked through displays of Noah’s ark, with background descriptions and the Biblical account of the flood.  Various scenes of the Bible were displayed in a way that made the Biblical information understandable and visual.  Some of the characters were animated and utterly life-like.  The account of Christ and his atonement was also given.  Children would have found the whole “Walk Through History” interesting and informative.  I must say that we, as adults, were also fascinated and edified by it all.

As one walks through the museum, he can stop and listen or read numerous displays.  A comparison between the evolutionary model and the creation model of the Bible was often provided.  These enlightening exhibits helped us, the viewers, to put the natural world into perspective and we could see that the creative and sustaining hand of God had brought the natural world into existence and continues to sustain it today.  How inferior (and false) is the unbelieving evolutionary theories that dominate the secular and humanistic education in this country.  How sad that children and young people are only exposed to the irrational and dishonoring theories that would tell them that they are simply the result of random chance and billions of years.  They are falsely told that they are just an advanced ape that itself is just the advanced animal from a preexisting animal.  Children and young people deserve something better!

If one wants to spend the day on location, he could eat at the “Palm Café” and, in warmer weather, he could eat on the outside plaza.  We found the guides and museum personnel to be helpful and kind.  We understand that some of these are volunteers from the community, ones who wish to contribute something of value to the visitors who come from the whole country as well as foreign lands.

The various displays are found on a series of DVD presentations in case you would like to see some of the highlights on your computer.  Yet we doubt that you would receive the full impact that a personal visit would bring.

Moni and I can testify to the blessing that this visit was to us and we think that you also would value a visit if you can ever arrange it.  We did regret the “easy believism” that was found in a presentation toward the end of the museum tour.  Other than that, the Biblical and scientific information was accurate, helpful and enlightening.

If any of you are interested in learning more, you can call 888-582-4253.  You can also check their website, www.answersingenesis.org.  This will offer you many online articles along with an online store to purchase DVDs, books, curricula, calendars, and other creationist items.
