Deception and Destruction

The Contemporary Islamic War on Non-Radical Muslims and Others

Richard Hollerman

If you are like me, you never cease to be amazed with the amount of spiritual deception in the world. Some people are deceived themselves and some deceive others. As Paul tells us, “evil men and imposters will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13).

Some people are deceived but they assume they are right. I think of Paul who testified, “I thought to myself that I had to do many things hostile to the name of Jesus of Nazareth” (Acts 26:9). He was deceived—but he didn’t know it. Then there are others who deceive others and are aware of what they are doing. And still others deceive people (their listeners or readers) while thinking that they are telling the truth but actually they are deceived themselves. How Satan, “who deceives the whole world” has darkened the minds and hearts of people that deception is so prevalent on earth!

When we look at history, we can think of almost countless examples of deception. Think of the Catholic Crusaders who were utterly deceived as they went from city to city, killing Muslims or Orthodox. Think of the Orthodox who killed Catholics. Think of the Calvinists who killed their opponents. Or think of the Catholics who killed both Lutherans and Catholics. And then there were Catholics and others who killed Anabaptists. In one way or another, all of these were deceived.

Deception and Destruction

Even today, we look at the world and see how Muslims are deceived in murdering non-Muslims in Africa, in Europe, in Asia, and in the Middle East. Then there are the Communists who kill professing Christians in China, in North Korea, and elsewhere. Of course, there is fighting between groups of Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and others. Do all of these people know that they are sinning and will spend an eternity in Hell because of their atrocities? In one respect, people do know that they are involved in sin, but apparently many have so blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, that they can do openly wicked things and feel no great remorse.

Just a couple of days ago, the headlines in the newspaper read, “’It’s a massacre’; Taliban kills 95 in explosion” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, January 28, 2018). The article begins: “The Taliban drove an ambulance packed with explosives into a crowded Kabul street Saturday, setting off an enormous blast that killed at least 95 people and injured 158 others, adding to the grim toll of what has been one of the most violent stretches of the long way, Afghan officials said” (Ibid.).

The article continued, “The attack, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, came days after a 15-hour siege by the militants at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul that left 22 dead, including 14 foreigners” (Ibid.). We are shocked to continue reading: “The large casualty toll was another reminder of how badly Afghanistan is bleeding. Over the past year, about 10,000 of the country’s security forces have been killed and more than 16,000 others wounded, according to a senior Afghan government official. The Taliban losses are believed to be about the same” (Ibid.).

This deadly “war” continues on the streets and in the fields of this Islamic country where some 99% of the population are Muslims. Remember that this is one of the nations where non-Muslims can be killed by “radical” Muslims. Becoming a Christian from Islam is considered a great capital offense. These Muslims (part of the Taliban) don’t stop at targets that would be considered opponents of Islam. Many of the ones that these radicals kill are fellow-Muslims! “’It’s a massacre,’ said Dejan Panic, coordinator in Afghanistan for the Italian aid group Emergency, which runs a near-by trauma hospital. At least 70 people were brought to the group’s Kabul hospital” (Ibid.). Interestingly, these “radical” Muslims are actually following Muhammad, their leader, for he was known for his violence and wickedness as he “purged” Mecca of idolatry.

One of the tragic things about this loss of life is that apparently many of the “radical” Muslims who carry out such atrocities think that they are doing service to Allah, their god. They expect to be rewarded for their daring and for their opposition to others. In fact, they think that they will be taken to Paradise by Allah and will receive all of the carnal pleasures that they have read and heard about. How deceived!

This sort of situation should almost make us shocked and dismayed at the power of the enemy of our souls—Satan. We marvel that millions upon millions of “radical” Muslims can be so wrong while thinking they are right! They think that they will go to Paradise for their faithfulness and their killing, whereas surely they will be sent to a place of “torment” (Luke 16:23) and “agony” (vv. 24, 25). Of course, eventually, they will be sent to the lake of fire, otherwise known as hell (Matthew 25: 41, 46; Revelation 20:14-15; 21:8). How deceived! And how deceptive!

Deception and Destruction

Of course, we don’t only speak about the murder that is perpetrated by these radical Muslims, but also the deception for which they are guilty. Surely they don’t just drive an ambulance filled with explosives into Kabul and tell everyone what they are doing. No, they deceive people into thinking that this was a legitimate ambulance for sick and injured patients. They want people to believe one thing whereas the truth is very different. Thus, Scripture warns that “all liars” will be sent to the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8). This would include deceiving and lying Muslims.

We don’t mean to single out Islam here. We are aware that there have been millions—tens of millions—maybe hundreds of millions—of people who have committed such sins as murder, lying, false teaching, promoting false beliefs, and many other sins. All of these result in spiritual death (Romans 6:23)! All unforgiven sin will be punished by a holy, righteous, and just God. God is One who “inflicts wrath” (Romans 3:5) and is “storing up wrath” in “the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God” (Romans 2:5).

Whether we are speaking of Muslims who lie and kill, Catholics and Protestants who lie and kill, or Hindus, Buddhists, and Communists who lie and kill, we are speaking about a serious, dreadful ploy of Satan, our dreadful enemy. When we think about how Muslims are much in the news and nearly every day our newspapers describe the latest killings, we should remember what we have examined today. While we should be angry at such heartless slaughter (cf. Mark 3:5), we should also be dreadful that the devil has such power. One day he will be punished, along with all of his demonic force, but in the meanwhile we see a world in chaos, a world in deep deception! Let us observe and respond then rescue these deceived people as we have the opportunity!
