Blogging with Atheists and Evolutionists

(Part 1)

Richard Hollerman

It has been said that there are no true atheists. The term atheism means, “disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods,” or, “the doctrine that there is no God or gods” (The American Heritage College Dictionary). Literally, the word means non-theist (and “theist” comes from the Greek, theos, meaning “God”).  However, we question whether people are really genuine atheists.

To affirm that there is no God, one would need to be God Himself!  The most logical position to take would be that of an “agnostic,” one who claims to be “ignorant of whether this is a God or not.” It has been pointed out that there are two kinds of agnostics: the dishonest one and the honest one. By this, they mean that a dishonest agnostic will affirm that he doesn’t know whether there is a God and he has no interest at all in discovering whether God actually exists. The honest agnostic is one who says that he doesn’t know if there is a God, but he is open to the possibility that there is a God—if sufficient evidence is presented to him to convince him of the truthfulness of theism.

We think that there is more hope for the “honest” agnostic than there is for the “dishonest” one.  If it is true that he seeks evidence, that evidence is there. It may be found. And, logically, he should be willing to acknowledge God’s existence if we present actual evidence.

This seems to be logical, but people traditionally are not logical.  The Bible affirms this very fact.  Paul the apostle says, “That which is known about God is evident within them, for God made it evident to them” (Romans 1:19).  He then presents a most crucial fact: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse” (v. 20).

In other words, the creation itself proves that God created it. People can “see” in the natural world “His eternal power and divine nature.” This includes the unlettered Aborigine from Australia, the tribal member in the Amazon, the communist from China, and the university professor from France or America. People can know that there is a God, that He is creator, and even know something about His power and wisdom. (While people can know of God’s existence, they can’t know about Jesus His Son, for this comes through the proclamation of the “gospel” or good news of Christ, found in the Scriptures.)

However, Paul continues to write, “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks. . . . Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21-22).  People know in their hearts and minds that there is a God of creation for it is so clear. But they deny Him. They refuse to acknowledge Him or give Him the praise, honor, and thanks that God as Creator deserves. They are simply “fools”!  As the psalmist wrote, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1; 53:1).

Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss the truth of God and creation with a number of self-professed “atheists” and evolutionists on the web.  This is how this happened.  A couple months ago I noticed a short video with a drama. The scene showed a teacher in some unknown country (some suggested Poland, India, or another one) requiring the class to affirm that 2+2=5. Of course, we know that this is incorrect, but the teacher was forcing the children to affirm this. According to the teacher, if there was no acceptance of this lie, there would be serious consequences.  One boy stood up and said that he couldn’t affirm anything other than the truth—that 2+2=4.  The result was that the boy (about nine or ten years of age, as I recall) was killed by the school authorities!

I thought that this would be an opportunity to show how this same principle is operative in our own “civilized” world.  We know that God created all things, just as the Bible explains it in Genesis 1 and Exodus 20:11 and many other places (John 1:1-4; Colossians 1:16-17; etc.). But we also know that vast numbers of people, including educated scientists, openly deny this fact. They claim that the universe was formed from an imaginary “Big Bang,” involving a tiny speck that supposedly spread out, the very beginning of the billions of galaxies of the universe! This was supposed to happen about 14 billion years ago. This eventually resulted in our own solar system, including the earth and the planets, about 4.5 billion years ago.

With this in mind, I wrote the following piece.  I had no idea that I would save it and reproduce it by this means, but at least you can see what I had to say:

Whether this is speaking of the authority of government, or the authority of education or parental authority, the point is that no one has the right to change truth. The ultimate authority is God and He speaks through His written Word, the Bible. If human authority tells us that 2+2=5 we must object. The truth is that 2+2=4. Similarly, when anyone tries to tell us that there is no God, that evolution is true, that sodomy is acceptable, that living together before marriage is permissible, or that killing one’s baby is fine, we must object. Truth is truth regardless of who denies it.

In the case of this little film, the child paid with his life but he stood for truth. Today if we acknowledge God, if we accept creation, if we deny the big bang, if we contend for the respect for life, we may pay a serious price. In some countries it may require laying down one’s life. But the question is what is the truth—not how many people believe something, not whether a government stands for something, and not whether friends hold to any particular opinion.

Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31, 32). Will you accept the truth regardless of the cost?

As you might imagine, great numbers of atheists, evolutionists, agnostics, skeptics, and naturalists immediately pounced on my words and ridiculed the idea of God and His creation.  Over the next weeks, responses continued to come in and I continued to respond to at least some of them.  A total of 120 exchanges have been registered thus far and now it is down to a trickle.  If we were to include other responses to the original video, there have been 2,359 responses! The video evoked such a great response!

In a Part 2 to this theme, we’ll plan to include some of the responses to my original comment about the video. Eventually, I decided to copy and paste some of my responses to these responses!  We hope that you find the exchange interesting. You will see how rabid some atheists, skeptics, and evolutionists can be when the truth of God is presented, including His creation of all things, according to the Bible.
