Blameless and Innocent in a Crooked and Perverse Generation!
Presently the United States is in the midst of a heated conflict to elect a new president in November. Wherever we look and whatever we hear, it seems that the quarrels between the candidates is paramount. Both Democrats and Republicans believe that this election is utterly important for their respective causes.
Probably everyone in the country has come to see the hatred, the bitterness, and the animosity that this election has generated. Both Democrats and Republicans rise to support their candidates while denouncing the opponents. Yet the flaws and wrongs of both leading contenders are right there for us to see. Hillary Clinton’s dishonesty, lies, boastfulness, immoral stance, and rank liberalism is well known. And Donald Trump’s pride, boastfulness, lustfulness, immorality, belligerence, and inexperience is also well known.
The radio, TV, newspapers, and internet all demonstrate the hatred, slander, dishonesty, close-mindedness, and wickedness of the candidates as well as their defenders. A deepening darkness now envelops the land, with sin abounding from all quarters. Neither side is blameless; rather, both sides are blameworthy. Neither side is Christian in orientation; rather, both are clearly opposing the perfect ways of God.
In light of this deplorable state in America, it is good to remind ourselves of Paul’s admonition to “prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16a). Indeed, as America descends deeper and deeper into evil, wickedness, immorality, secularism, humanism, materialism, hedonism, and unbelief it is more and more important for God’s people to shine as lights in this fallen world!
The apostle calls on us to be “blameless and innocent” in this world. We are to examine ourselves and determine to be without blame and commit ourselves to be innocent in a guilty world. Since we are children of God, we are to be above reproach in a crooked and perverse generation. We need to open our eyes to see as never before the crookedness of our culture and the perversion of our society! And in this kind of place and at this time of history, we are to be “lights in the world.” As someone has pointed out, the darker the night, the brighter the lights. Likewise, the darker the spiritual and moral state of the nation, the brighter will be our influence. We do this, in part, by holding fast the word of life. This has also been translated, “holding forth” the word of life. Actually, we are to hold the word of life fast and are also to hold it forth. We are to be influenced by God’s precious word and also are to extend this word, the word of the gospel, to those who are caught up in the sin and degradation of contemporary America!
All of our readers have been living in a world of spiritual darkness for years and many of you realize that the darkness is becoming darker and darker. As Proverbs 4:19 says:
The way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know over what they stumble.
Unborn babies are being killed. In America, since 1973, there have been over 50 million infants put to death in the most inhumane ways. More than 50 percent of the citizens now are willing to accept the perversion of homosexuality. People seldom even think of whether a divorce and remarriage is adulterous—yet most of these remarriages indeed do constitute adultery. Think of the amount of profanity and vulgarity that is freely passed around in this society. Presently it is unlawful to present the truth of creation in the classroom, but it is necessary to indoctrinate the children and young people with the godless and wicked lie of evolution! What an utter perversion and disbelief has enveloped our culture! We could go on and on, but this shows that we are living in a dark and wicked age and unspiritual society. And if this is the way it is in America that began as a religious nation, think of the present state of affairs in the 200 other countries of the world!
Now is the time for true Christians to allow their light to shine forth as never before. Let’s prove ourselves to be “blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world.” Do you have such a perspective? Is this the way you and I are living?
