Are You a Man or a Woman

Are You a Man or a Woman?

Facebook’s Gender Confusion!

It wasn’t more than a few years ago that we had a simple choice. You have filled in forms, as I have, and generally they had a place for one’s gender. Just as such forms asked for marital status, years of education, and place of origin, so they would give a choice for one’s gender—either male or female, man or woman.

Today a rather long article was released from Menlo Park, California, dealing with the recent change in the Facebook menu. As you know, Facebook is a very popular form of social media. The article, “Facebook adds menu of options for gender” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, February 14, 2014), points out that presently there are 159 million monthly users in the United States alone!  Further, there are 1.23 billion users in the world!  You can see how widespread Facebook really is. This is an overwhelming number of souls!

Many of you probably have a Facebook account. Personally, I did sign up for this some time ago but have seldom consulted it.  I do believe that there is potential for some good in proclaiming the gospel or sharing aspects of the Word of God, but I just haven’t had the time to devote to this project yet. With God’s help, I may be able to do something with it in the future.

The point we wish to mention here is that the leaders of Facebook have just given another option to those who use this form of media. They say that now users need not classify themselves as either male or female. They have other options.  They can call themselves bi-gender, androgynous, intersex, gender fluid, or transsexual! Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison is a man who has worked on this project. But you may respond, “Doesn’t Brielle sound like a woman’s name?” Yes, but He is a man who wants to be a woman. Not content with the way God made him, he chooses to display himself as a woman! The article says, “Harrison . . .  herself [is] undergoing gender transformation from male to female.” (Notice that the newspaper now uses pronouns according to a person’s orientation, not according to the person’s real gender.) Harrison says that he is changing his identity “from Female to Trans-Woman.”

According to the Williams Institute (a think-tank at the liberal University of California, LA campus) suggests that there are at least 700,000 people in the United States who “identify as transgender, an umbrella term that includes people who live as a gender different from the one assigned to them at birth” (Ibid.). While this number seems high, it does show that there are a lot of confused men and women in this country.  And we would point out that they are not only confused, but they are unrealistic (for a man is a man and a woman is a woman). They are lying to themselves—and, worse yet, they are lying to others. Can you imagine sharing a public bathroom with someone of the opposite sex!

The Word of God says that in the beginning, the Lord created a man and a woman: “Male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). The Lord Jesus also affirmed that God “created them from the beginning” and “made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4). He didn’t create a man, a woman, along with a man who thought he was a woman or a woman who thought she was a man, or even a man who wanted to be a woman and a woman who wanted to be a man. They knew who they were. They were content with what they were.

It is a grievous sin to rebel against the way God has created us. He created you as a man or a woman for a purpose and for His glory. We must not be discontent with His choice. There are blessings, as well as problems, with each of the genders. Let’s be content with the gender God has given us.

If we have opportunity, be willing to share the truth of God’s word with others who are confused people in this secular and anti-God world. Speak forth the truth of the Lord about sexuality to those who have been perverted by the rebellious thoughts of this world. Just because Facebook has chosen to rebel against the Maker of heaven and earth, the creator of male and female, we need not follow this immoral perspective. We can be pure and holy people in the midst of a sexually perverse world!
