African-Americans, Please Don’t be Deceived!

(The Challenge of being Neither Republican nor Democrat but Christian!)

Richard Hollerman

Although we address African-Americans (some would prefer “Blacks”), our plea would be to everyone, whether black, white, yellow, red, or any other combination of shades.  (We must remember that there is only one race—the human race—and the idea that there are multiple races on earth arose from an ungodly evolutionary way of thinking of things. We must not be sucked into Darwinian thinking!)

But we don’t just address blacks in general, but true followers of Jesus, genuine Christians. I hope that you will agree with me that this doesn’t describe most blacks. And neither does it describe most whites!

I was dismayed to read a newspaper article recently entitled, “Black voters are leading a Democratic surge” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, December 21, 2017). The editorial asserts that in Alabama’s recent election of a person to fill a senate seat, formerly held by a very conservative candidate, more than 9 in 10 black voters were going to the Democrats! According to the article, at least 28 percent of those who voted were blacks and 96 percent of these voted Democrat!

(We also notice that, “In Alabama, Virginia and elsewhere, younger voters and suburbanites are also swinging Democratic.”) We find this very grieving. Yet, we recognize that young people, with a moral and political view that is highly humanistic, relativistic, evolutionary, and liberal, would find a welcome within the more liberal Democratic Party.

We know that the Democratic Party is the haven for a wide assortment of liberal and evil forces. Generally, sodomites (or homosexuals of all sorts), liberal Jews, atheists, agnostics, and other left-wingers have gone to the Democrats. Furthermore, those who want the “right” to kill babies in the womb (abortionists), those who want the privilege of homosexuals to “marry,” and promoters of other societal sins, have generally gone to the Democrats.

On the other hand, some people point out the fact that most Protestant Evangelicals have gone to the Republican Party.  But don’t jump to this conclusion so quickly!

Does this make the Republicans the “Christian” party while the Democrats are the “Atheistic” or “Immoral” party? We must beware of coming to this conclusion! It is true that many sins of society are found within the Democratic camp; however, many sins are also found within the Republican camp. No political party is exempt from these abominable sins.

Thus, we must not jump to the wrongful conclusion that the Democrats are generally ungodly while the Republicans are God-fearing. Not at all! The Bible is true when it declares, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). As Paul puts it, “There is none who does good, there is not even one” (v. 12b). This includes Republicans as well as Democrats.

This situation calls our attention to the fact that the Christian has been called “apolitical” or “a-political.” In other words, the follower of Jesus realizes that he or she doesn’t fit into the political mold that the world wishes. We may observe the fightings or contests of the Republicans, the Democrats, and the Independents, but we are not of this world and don’t partake of the wickedness of society in which we live. As Peter reminds us, we constitute a separate entity in the world. We are part of “a holy nation” that is different from the ungodly nations of this fallen world (1 Peter 2:9). Jesus, our Mighty King, plainly declared, “My kingdom is not of this world. . . . My kingdom is not of this realm” (John 18:26). Instead, Paul wrote, “Our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20a). Isn’t this plain enough?

Isn’t this the way it should be? If you are one of the few who belong to God’s earthly kingdom (who will become His heavenly kingdom), let’s be content with our spiritual relationship with God, our membership in a spiritual kingdom, bearing spiritual weapons (not carnal ones). If we are black or white or any other ethnic background, let’s not side with the Democrats, the Republicans, or the Independents. Let’s be willing to see the gross sin, the compromises, the unscriptural principles, the ungodly practices in all political parties.

If we do this, we don’t need to condemn the compromising, ungodly, immoral, and evil stance and decisions of the Democratic Party. We don’t need to condemn the self-righteous, compromising, immoral, or greedy stance of the Republicans, along with the filthy-mouth, materialistic stance, and immoral lifestyle of President Trump. We can be free from all of this, as we go about our simple non-political life of living for God in His eternal Kingdom! Will you join me in this holy position and eternal perspective?
