Three-fold Irony of June 12, 2017

Richard Hollerman

Many of us are aware of the special one-year anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting in America.  On June 12, “a wall of flowered hearts, representing each of the 49 victims of the Orlando nightclub massacre, stands on the side of the Pulse nightclub Monday” (Star-Telegram, June 13, 2017).

The article continues, “Church bells tolled 49 times, a giant rainbow flag hung from a county government building and the names of the victims of the club attack were read aloud at various ceremonies Monday, as people in the Florida city and beyond remembered the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. During the midday service, speakers talked less about the tragedy and more about how Orlando-area residents came together in the aftermath” (Ibid).

This was not just an event led by or remembered by those who frequented this homosexual place of debauchery, but the entire city and state was involved. Churches tolled their bells 49 times, in honor of those killed. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer spoke of the “strength” of the survivors. The Orlando Gay Chorus, a local homosexual singing group, performed. Governor Rick Scott required that the United States flag be flown at half-staff in the state of Florida. The familiar “gay-pride flag” was flown at the Orange County government building. Even President Donald Trump tweeted that “we will NEVER FORGET the victims who lost their lives.” U. S. Senator Bill Nelson stated, “Isn’t it interesting it had the opposite effect? It brought us together in unity and love.”

Three-fold Irony

Isn’t it amazing that the city, the county, the state, and even some in the country indicated support for the victims of this horrible act! Isn’t it amazing that even he churches participated in the one-year anniversary event by tolling their bells! Pulse owner Barbara Poma plans to build a memorial in memory of those slain at the sodomite club. She said, “I miss Pulse. I miss everything it stood for.”

Reader, what do you think? How are you viewing this anniversary event and the widespread support of those killed at this site? Are you viewing all of this through the humanistic and immoral eyes of much of the American public? Or, in contrast, are you viewing all of this through God’s eyes—the One who created us “male and female” and requires that we live holy, pure, and godly lives(Genesis 1:26-27; Titus 2:11-12)? As you know, there is a world of difference between these two perspectives!

Three-fold Irony

We entitled this piece as being a “three-fold irony” –and can you see what we mean by this? There are three aspects to this tragic happening of a year ago and we must not overlook each of the three.

First, we see the wickedness of the sin of murder! Perhaps because so many people have viewed simulated acts of murder in movies and on the TV, we have become accustomed to this horrible sin—but God doesn’t just accept murder as something inconsequential. Rather, He totally condemns it! Jesus says that “murders” come “from within, out of the heart of men” and they “defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23). Murder comes from the heart and is acted out in real life. Further, Paul says that those with a depraved mind who are filled with unrighteousness, wickedness, and other attitudinal sins are full of murder, and this makes one “worthy of death” (Romans 1:29-32). Murder is serious! Further, God tells us that murderers will be sent to “the lake that burns with fire and brimstone,” which is the “second death” (Revelation 21:8).

This means that what Omar Mateen did that fateful day was a horrible sin that will result in his eternal condemnation. Even Mateen’s wife is being held and is facing charges for her involvement in this sin. She too will face a holy and just God one day—unless she chooses to repent!

Second, Omar Mateen gave as his motivation for carrying out this horrible act. He pledged a commitment to the Islamic State! Do we see what this means? Omar was loyal to a radical Islamic group that claims a loyalty to Muhammad and the Koran. We know that if anyone does not believe in and follow the Lord Jesus Christ, he  cannot be saved (Mark 16:16). Jesus declared, “He who does not believe [in Jesus] has been judged already,” and “he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:18, 36).

Thus, one who chooses to believe in and follow Muhammad instead of placing his faith and obedience in the Lord Jesus, the Son of the Living God, is presently under the righteous wrath of God and will be condemned! But, thanks to God, even the murderer who rejects the Lord Jesus may find forgiveness if he is willing to humble himself and repent of such a horrible act. (For Omar, it is too late for he was killed by police after the incident.)

Third, a third irony is that the public, including political and community leaders, seems to support this utterly-wicked sodomite nightclub (Pulse) where these 49 people were murdered. Even churches, of all things, seem to support this homosexual and debauched place and the homosexual victims! People spoke of the “love and compassion and unity” that were evoked from this tragic event.

Three-fold Irony

The ironic thing about this is that God abhors the perversion of homosexuality (and all other sexually immoral relationships, such as fornication, adultery, etc.). God calls homosexuality an involvement with “degrading passions” and “unnatural” lusts. It involves “indecent acts” and those who commit such acts of perversion are “worthy of death” and the “judgment of God” (Romans 1:27-28, 32; 2:2). Scripture says that one who is guilty of homosexuality (without repenting) cannot “inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; cf. Galatians 5:19-21). Why should we in any way applaud, condone or praise people who have died, unrepentant, and are guilty of abhorrent sexual perversion?

Indeed it is “ironic” that this event brings together three gross sins that will keep one from the kingdom of God, that will bring one under the justice and wrath of God, and that will send one to the flames of hell fire! America has entered a dreadful condition of confusion in which people can no longer think rationally and be just in their view of reality. God makes it clear that the sins of murder, unbelief, and sexual immorality are all dreadful and will condemn one under His just sentence. Are we willing to change our focus and view the condition of America from God’s own stand point? Or will we continue to remain in the dreadful cesspool of wickedness and perversion. “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 12:15; 16:25).
